MMASucka’s UFC Vegas 67 Staff Picks

2023 has only just begun for our MMASucka staff picks.

UFC Vegas 67, also titled as UFC Fight Night 217, will take place later tonight, January 14th from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event is the promotion’s first of the calendar year and first in four weeks. Five fights compose the main card beginning at 7:00pm ET (4:00pm PT) live to subscribers on ESPN+. The preliminary card will begin three hours earlier at 4:00pm ET (1:00pm PT) also aired on ESPN+.

MMASucka will provide live results from the entire UFC Vegas 67: Strickland vs. Imavov event.

Also, be sure to recap our staff picks from Friday night’s ONE Fight Night 6 event from Bangkok, Thailand.

The Fights

The UFC’s first event of 2023 has already seen drastic change. Middleweights Kelvin Gastelum and Nassourdine Imavov were originally set to meet in the featured main event. However, an injury from Gastelum just days ago forced him out of the bout. Sean Strickland, with less than a weeks notice, will now fight Imavov in the light heavyweight division.

A quick turnaround it will be for Strickland who fought just 28 days ago on the promotion’s final card of 2022 losing a debatable split decision in the main event to Jared Cannonier. The former King of the Cage middleweight champion looks to avoid three straight octagon defeats in his fourth headlining bout. Strickland’s opponent, Imavov, is set for his first UFC headliner in just his sixth promotional fight. At just 27 years of age, the MMA Factory rising talent has won twelve of his 15 career matchups including finishes over Ian Heinisch and Edmen Shahbazyan along his active three-fight win streak.

In the co-main event, Dan Ige will faceoff against Damon Jackson in the featherweight division. Season three veteran of Dana White’s Contender Series Ige hopes to avoid four straight losses since his last victory over Gavin Tucker in March of 2021. Former LFA featherweight champion Jackson sees momentum in his side tonight with four straight UFC wins including three in 2022 alone.

Three additional fights compose the main card ahead: Hawaii’s Punahele Soriano meets former AMC Fight Nights middleweight champion Roman Kopylov; Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Ketlen Vieira squares off against former bantamweight title challenger Raquel Pennington; and undefeated bantamweight Umar Nurmagomedov takes on former Shooto and RFA featherweight champion Raoni Barcelos at 135 pounds.

Staff Picks

MMASucka staff picks are composed of five promotions throughout all of 2023: the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Bellator MMA, ONE Championship, the Professional Fighters League (PFL), and Dana White’s Contender Series (DWCS).

UFC and Bellator events will feature picks from the entire main cards. PFL will feature select fights from the main and preliminary card while DWCS sees all fights counted from the event. ONE returns to our picks for the first time since 2020 and will feature only mixed martial arts (MMA) fights selected from cards with a minimum of at least three matchups.

Wesley Riddle won staff picks in 2022 with a record of 264-135.
