McGregor Forever – A Review of Episode 1

The UFC megastar, Conor McGregor documented his life in another docuseries in collaboration with Netflix. Released on May 17th, we look at ‘McGregor Forever’ episode one ‘Bad Blood’, an hour-long mini documentary. The entire series focusses on McGregor’s life after his blockbuster boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

McGregor Forever

The documentary begins by looking at  McGregor’s journey from Crumlin’s boxing gyms to the UFC. From his humble beginnings to where he is today.

We get to have an insight into McGregor’s home life, from family time to his interactions with his children.

Khabib Nurmagomedov Chapter

There is a clear focus on the Khabib Nurmagomedov fight throughout episode one. Their fight went down at UFC 229 in October 2018. The incident that sparked the whole saga off was an interaction between McGregor’s teammate, Artem Lobov and Nurmagomedov, where Nurmagomedov approached Lobov and questioned him about comments previously made. This led to the infamous ‘dolly incident’ at UFC 223.

The documentary touches on the announcement of Khabib vs. McGregor and how it captured the audience. It shows never before seen footage of The Notorious training in preparation for Khabib’s wrestling game at SBG Ireland, with a voiceover and explanation from his coach, John Kavanagh. Kavanagh is quoted saying the training camp was “very dark, very negative. A lot of the training was Conor just kind of wanting to come in and fight people. Conor didn’t really want to come in and drill with the guy and train”. A worrying insight for fans of McGregor for sure.

He also revealed that just three weeks prior to the fight, he dislocated his toe and showed visible frustration when there was a chance that it would affect his fight. We saw him being forced to train in shoes to protect the toe pre-fight. On top of that, we saw highlights of the infamous New York press conference and how unhinged McGregor appeared to be throughout the whole affair.

We got to relive just how epic the aura around McGregor was on the night of UFC 229. The episode shows fight highlights, including just how helpless McGregor was at the hands of Nurmagomedov and how frantic the corner team from SBG Ireland were.

Footage of the stoppage, aftermath and fallout are all also shown. It shows a rare insight into the devastation McGregor was feeling at the time. The raw emotion of McGregor were clearly on show. Discussing the brawl with Team Nurmagomedov, McGregor stated: “Who cares about all that, I was beat, that’s what matters”.

Post-Fight

The episode, interestingly shows an insight into the community service that McGregor has to partake in following the UFC 223 incident and how it could potentially positively affect him going forwards with regards to outlook.

The episode rounds out with quotes from plenty of people and journalists doubting him and gives a hint as to what the next episode might look like.
