Inaugural Scottish Sumo Open Preview

Scotland will put its hat into the international sumo arena this weekend as the Clan Sumo Scotland club will host the inaugural Scottish Sumo Open.

The event will take place August 5th at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. The venue, which can host up to 5,000 onlookers, has a history of hosting athletic events and will be used for the first time to host a sumo competition of international proportions.

The Clan Sumo Scotland club has detailed that the event will begin with day-of-competition weigh-ins. Competition will feature both men’s and women’s athletes across several weight divisions including heavyweight and openweight. Competitors across European nations including Norway, Poland, England, Switzerland, and of course, Scotland will take part on Saturday. Sri Lanka and the United States will also be represented during competition. Over seventy athletes will be competing.
