Point-Counterpoint: Johnson vs. Cejudo II

Saturday at UFC 227, live from Los Angeles, California, will be a night of rematches. The UFC‘s co-main event will feature all-time great, Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson as he takes on Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo. Cejudo will get his second chance as dethroning the flyweight king. How will Johnson vs. Cejudo play out this time?

Cejudo has made vast improvements since their first matchup at UFC 197. Maybe the most important thing for Cejudo has been the time to mature as a fighter.

So the question everyone wants to know is, “Can Cejudo actually dethrone Mighty Mouse?” Kelly Richards of MyMMANews.com and I will do a point-counterpoint, which will be the second edition of our joint project with MyMMANews.com.

PCP: Johnson vs. Cejudo II

It is no secret that Cejudo’s secret to success is his wrestling. The 2008 freestyle wrestling gold medalist spent most of the first contest with Johnson in the clinch and even pulled off a successful trip takedown. Since his loss to Johnson, Cejudo has gone 2-1. The loss was a split decision to Joseph Benavidez where Cejudo was deducted one point for low blows.

Cejudo is hitting the five-year mark in his professional career. In Johnson’s fifth year as a professional fighter, he won the UFC flyweight title. Many times a loss for a fighter will help them turn the corner to greatness or will lead them to crumble. Johnson sustained two losses in his career as well before earning the title. Cejudo will hope to have Johnson’s success after losses.

Cejudo has a greater sense of urgency for this rematch. He told MMAjunkie, “There’s not too many times in life you get a chance at redemption. There’s no time to waste now. I’m seizing the opportunity. I’m smarter now.”
