Alistair Overeem Tests Positive for Banned Substance at Glory Collision 4

After his Glory Collision 4 win, Alistair Overeem has reportedly tested positive for a banned substance. An investigation has started into the Dutch-born athlete. Overeem’s A sample, which was provided directly after his fight with Badr Hari, had tested positive for a banned substance and now we are awaiting testing of his B sample.

According to Alistair Overeem’s management, while it may have been a banned substance, they claim that it was not a performance enhancing drug.

Overeem has fought a legendary career in PRIDE FC, DREAM, Strikeforce, K-1 Kickboxing, and the UFC. Throughout that time, he has had a history of testing positive for banned substances.

Alistair Overeem Tests Positive for Banned Substance at Glory Collision 4

At Glory Collision 4, Overeem defeated his long-time rival Badr Hari in a kickboxing showdown. Most of Overeem’s fight camp was hosted in Thailand. The legendary 42-year-old combat sports athlete was then next in line to fight Rico Verhoeven for the GLORY Kickboxing Heavyweight World Championship in March 2023. Due to the most recent finding, this fight is now doubtful.

It is more likely that the top-contender Antonio Plazibat will now face Verhoeven next year. Croatia’s Plazibat is on a four fight consecutive knockout win streak with his most recent being a first round KO against Raul Catinas in November 2022 at GLORY 82

Lars Van Soest of De Telegraaf first reported:
[Translated Dutch to English]

Alistair Overeem seemed to be Rico Verhoeven’s next opponent, but will have to pause for the time being. After his match against Badr Hari in October, the 42-year-old kickboxer handed in a [sample] in which a prohibited substance was found. Various sources have confirmed this to De Telegraaf. Overeem’s management is currently awaiting the results of the b-sample and would not comment further. However, according to them, the substance found is not a performance-enhancing substance. After his victory over Hari, Overeem seemed to be the appropriate new opponent of heavyweight champion Verhoeven. Only the signatures still had to be signed, otherwise the deal between Glory, Verhoeven and Overeem was as good as settled. On Saturday, however, it became clear that there is a hitch. Verhoeven first responded to a challenge from Antonio Plazibat via social media, which he initially ignored. The 28-year-old Croatian has been crying out for a fight against the champion for months and did so again on Saturday after his impressive knockout victory over Raul Catinas. Verhoeven responded with: “I am here. Make sure that party comes, Glory.” Verhoeven (33) has never made a secret of being open to a fight against the internationally renowned Overeem. Last month, The King of Kickboxing saw with his own eyes how the former K-1 winner dealt with Hari, after which both visited each other in the ring and threw [shade].”
