The Fight Itself
The fight itself was competitive for as long as it lasted, with all the rounds seemingly being very close. Neither fighter dominated the fight itself, despite Canelo being ahead on all scorecards.

The rounds were close, but with a crowd that was ‘pro-Canelo’, the shots that were maybe missing or landing on Saunders’ guard were being cheered by the crowd, possibly influencing the judges.
We told you that Saunders didn’t have the power to trouble the Mexican and unfortunately for him, this came to light. Saunders couldn’t seem to keep Canelo off him and this was the Brit’s undoing.
It was ultimately a big right uppercut that ended things in Texas. Billy Joe Saunders looped a big right hook, which Canelo expertly slipped, just far enough away so that he wouldn’t get caught. Canelo returned with an uppercut right to the unprotected eye of Saunders. This lead to Saunders not getting off his stool for the ninth round, handing Canelo Alvarez his 38th finish in 56 victories.
It was revealed that Saunders had suffered multiple fractures to the orbital area and will undergo surgery.
Just at hospital in Dallas, @bjsaunders_ stayed in overnight. Suffered multiple fractures to orbital area and will undergo surgery this afternoon.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Billy Joe Saunders Highlights
What’s Next for Canelo Alvarez?
After yet another victory, progressing to 2-0 in 2021 already, it begs the question ‘What’s next?’. Having beaten Billy Joe Saunders, Canelo captured the WBO Super-Middleweight title, meaning he holds all the marbles…apart from one. Caleb Plant holds the IBF Super-Middleweight strap, having captured it back in 2019. Most recently Plant outpointed Caleb Traux in January to notch his third defense. It makes sense for the two of these men to face off for all the belts in an attempt to become the undisputed king of the super-middleweights.
There is also a fight opportunity down at middleweight to face the WBO middleweight champion, Demetrius Andrade. The two went back and forth at a press conference last week, so there is clearly some heat between the two men. Andrade, like Saunders, would be entering the bout undefeated at 30-0 but has long been criticized for his ‘ugly’ boxing style. Something Canelo himself mentioned during their back and forth.
There is an outside chance that Canelo goes back up to light heavyweight to take on either of the two killers currently dominating the division. Dmitry Bivol holds the WBA belt, making seven defences of his strap in just 18 professional fights, the hard hitter did look slightly lacklustre last time out and Canelo may look to capitalise on this.
Artur Beterbiev owns the WBC and IBF light heavyweight belts and with 16 knockouts in 16 fights, Canelo might not risk going up in weight and challenging the killer that is Beterbiev. Whatever happens, you know that we’ll have it covered right here at MMASucka.
