EFC 92 Preview

The EFC continues to be Africa’s biggest fight promotion, and they are back to produce yet another exciting year of events. 2021 ended off in dominant fashion as Luthando Biko captured the promotion’s flyweight championship at the top of a fast-paced, action-packed EFC 91 card. Now, three months after that event, the promotion is back and ready to set the pace for the rest of the year with their EFC 92 card. For their first event of the year, the EFC is putting on a 12-fight card that is promising some exciting match-ups. These fights will include newcomers looking to prove themselves, veterans looking to remind fight fans of their impact, as well as fighters aiming for championship contendership. Whilst all eyes are on the friendship-turned-bitter-rivals fight between Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington at UFC 272 this weekend, many on the African continent anxiously await the EFC 92 nail-biter main event which will witness the crowning of a new EFC middleweight champion between two training partners turned rivals as well.

Main Event: Luke Michael vs Pupanga Tresor

Former EFC middleweight champion, Dricus du Plessis, vacated the championship and made his move to the UFC, where he is slated to have his next fight in a month’s time. Now, the time has come for the EFC middleweight division to crown a champion once more. Luke Michael (5-4) began his amateur career in 2013 before quickly beginning his professional career. Right before the pandemic, ‘Young Gun’ went up against Themba Gorimbo for the EFC Welterweight Championship at EFC 82 but that quest proved to be unsuccessful. At EFC 87, Michael redeemed himself by catching EFC veteran, Dino Baggatin, in a Rear Naked Choke to get the submission victory at 1:21 of the first round. Since then, Michael’s focus has shifted to capturing the 185lb gold, and he is as determined as ever. The obstacle in Michael’s path, however, is one that will not be easy to maneuver past. Pupanga Tresor (4-4) is one of the most recognizable names on the African fight scene and, although he competes in the welterweight division, the opportunity to capture gold sees ‘Fireboy’ move up in the weight divisions. Tresor, like Michael, has also been competing professionally since 2014. Tresor’s last fight came at EFC Fight Night 1 last year, and he managed to get the unanimous decision victory over Kaleka Kabanda. Although both Michael and Tresor are both not a part of the EFC middleweight division, they now look to secure the top spot of the division. Tresor and Michael’s fight also goes beyond just their path to gaining gold as the two were, at one point, vital to each other’s path – now, those very same paths cross each other. They once built each other up and now, they look to tear each other down to get to the gold.
