Gable Steveson drops Major Comeback News for Jon Jones

Jon Jones hung up his fighting gloves last year. Having a charismatic career, ‘Bones’ thought it was time to finally explore other opportunities outside of the UFC Octagon. However, with the heavyweight division looking in jeopardy at the moment, Gable Steveson believes that Jones will be looking to make a comeback soon.

In a recent interaction with RMC Sport Combat, Steveson pointed out how things can turn for the UFC legend. He stated that following Tom Aspinall’s decision of vacating the title, Jones might just be tempted to step inside the octagon once more and reclaim his UFC gold. 

Steveson said, “I think Jon would like to come back also. Maybe seeing this belt open up put another fire into him. I've seen what can still do, and I know he can do it at the highest level. Maybe his time will come again, and I think it will.”

Currently, with Aspinall no longer the champion, there are a number of contenders who want to fight for the title. The first name on the list would be that of Ciryl Gane. Even Alex Pereira’s name, too, is being floated around in recent times. 

Meanwhile, trying to prove himself as a deserving champion, Aspinall had to make a hard decision. 

Tom Aspinall Shed Light on Current Status

Aspinall informed his fans in June this year that he was back in full training. He also pointed out that upon making his return, he would take on Gane for their rematch, but all of his plans seem to have fallen flat following his latest update. 

Taking to his social media, Aspinall said, “I've now made the decision to vacate the heavyweight title. I've asked the UFC to allow me to make this statement because I don't want to hold the heavyweight division up. I know what it's like to have your career put on hold and I want the other fighters to have the opportunity to compete for the title."

Aspinall cited complications in his eyes from Gane’s eye poke as the reason for his decision.
