Islam Makhachev Drops Injury Update and Confirms Return Date for Welterweight Title Defense

Islam Makhachev is putting in all the effort to remain an active champion. The Dagestani fighter moved up in weight after dominating the lightweight division of the UFC. Facing Jack Della Maddalena in his initial fight, Makhachev secured a statement victory. Defending his title against Ian Garry next, the UFC two-division champion did face some tough challenges but ultimately toppled the Irishman too. Now, looking to continue his dominance further, the Dagestani star has hinted at his potential return timeline. 

Islam Makhachev Wants to Fight in February 2027

Following the fight with Garry, Makhachev did express his desire to fight again soon. The UFC Welterweight Champion had previously said that he wanted to come back to the octagon before Ramadan. Now, in a recent interaction with Match TV, Makhachev has given a detailed account of his injuries, alongside a definitive return date. 

Makhachev said, “After the fight, I had three MRIs and had my entire spine checked. There are a few small issues, so I’m working on them. It’s nothing serious. I’m just strengthening my spine.”

He further added, “We’ll wait for the UFC to call. I think the ideal scenario would be to fight before Ramadan. Ramadan starts for us in February. A date before Ramadan would be ideal.”

At the moment, there are two names lingering as his next potential opponents. Carlos Prates and Michael Morales. With the fans inclined towards Prates, it remains to be seen who Dana White sets Makhachev’s date with. 

Ian Garry Feels Confident About Defeating Islam Makhachev

The Irishman had his chances to become the UFC Welterweight Champion. Unfortunately, things did not go as per his plans. But despite losing the bout, Garry made Makhachev go through some tough situations during their match. Now, in a recent statement, Garry pointed out that he was confident about beating the Dagestani superstar if a rematch were to happen now. 

Garry stated, “But I feel like if I fight him right now, I beat him. I just have so much confidence in myself, so much confidence in my team and the preparation that we do, I just wanna get back in there tomorrow and do it all over again." 

Currently, there are no confirmations about Garry getting a rematch with Makhachev.
