Islam Makhachev Picks Carlos Prates and Michael Morales over Shavkat Rakhmonov as Worthy Title Contenders

Islam Makhachev makes a clear choice on who should face him for the welterweight title, and it’s not Shavkat Rakhmonov.
Islam Makhachev has proven his brilliance in two UFC weight classes now. After dominating the lightweight category, Makhachev has now successfully defended his welterweight title against Ian ‘Machado’ Garry. Now, as he waits for his next opponent, the two-division champion has put forth his opinions on who he thinks is the most worthy of getting a title shot.
Islam Makhachev Wants to Wait on Shavkat Rakhmonov
Immediately after Makhachev defeated Garry, there have been a number of names that have popped up as the next potential challenger. The top two names that made the news were Michael Morales and Carlos Prates. However, there was also a third name, which was Rakhmonov. The Kazakh mixed martial arts star was once a title contender. But owing to his injury, Rakhmonov is now out of action.
Speaking about who should face him next, the Dagestani superstar sided with either Prates or Morales. He said, “Prates and Morales are two very serious contenders. Prates is a very solid opponent, very exciting and a big guy too.”
Reflecting on Rakhmonov’s chances, the two-division champion said, “Let Shavkat recover and come back. I never said I won't fight him. Let him heal his injuries and then we will see.”
Interestingly, Makhachev also recently confirmed when he is planning to come back.
Islam Makhachev Wants to Fight in February
Makhachev made it clear that he wants to be a fighting champion. Right after his welterweight victory against Garry, the champion confirmed that he wanted to fight again before Ramadan. Recently, he provided further clarification on the same.
Speaking with Match TV, Makhachev said, “After the fight, I had three MRIs and had my entire spine checked. There are a few small issues, so I’m working on them. It’s nothing serious. I’m just strengthening my spine.”
“We’ll wait for the UFC to call. I think the ideal scenario would be to fight before Ramadan. Ramadan starts for us in February. A date before Ramadan would be ideal,” he added.
Thus, with a lot going on, it remains to be seen what’s next.
