Islam Makhachev Sure Conor McGregor’s Injury Didn't Happen in Fight

Conor McGregor had perhaps one of the most hyped-up comebacks in UFC history.  While the fans wanted to see a McGregor special, the Irishman faltered badly. With his knee giving way, the fight didn't even last a round. Now, looking back at the injury, Islam Makhachev had an interesting take on the same. 

Islam Makhachev thinks Conor McGregor Picked up Injury in Training

The UFC Welterweight Champion is currently preparing for his upcoming title fight against Ian Garry. Ahead of the bout, the fighter interacted with UFC Eurasia. Among other topics, the 34-year-old also discussed Mystic Mac’s unfortunate injury. Elaborating on the same, Makhachev pointed out how he thought that McGregor might have gotten the injury while training. 

He said, “When you stop training, and then you want to come back again, your body just can’t handle it. A lot of people say this injury happened in the fight, but I think it happened in the training camp.” 

Surely, Makhachev might have a point. ‘The Notorious’ came back to the octagon after five long years. Thus, it was possible that during this time, his body went through a lot. However, there is no definitive proof about when exactly McGregor’s injury happened. Meanwhile, this was not the first time that the two-division champion spoke about the Irish superstar’s injury. 

Islam Makhachev Expressed Sympathy for Conor McGregor

Going up against Max Holloway at the UFC 329 main event, the bout lasted for only 69 seconds. Right from the beginning, ‘Mystic Mac’ looked in trouble as he kept falling to the ground. Following the bout, the former champ champ was diagnosed with a tear in his right ACL and meniscus. ‘The Notorious’ has recently also undergone surgery to fix the issue. 

Earlier this year, Makhachev told Complex Sports, “Honestly, I feel bad. I know Max is going to beat him, but not fast like this, in the first minute. I wanted to see how he fights after five years, and honestly, feel bad when this happened."

Currently, there is no news about when or if McGregor will make a UFC return.
