Jones vs Belfort…Machida and Rua turn down title shots!

|

Wow if things couldn’t get even more bizarre, according to MMAFighting.com, Lyoto Machida has turned down a title fight with Jon Jones that was tentatively scheduled for UFC 152 in Toronto, Ontario. Jones, who came under fire by fans and UFC President Dana White for not taking a very short notice fight with Chael Sonnen, is now fighting Vitor Belfort on September 22nd.

Apparently after Machida’s camp turned it down,  Shogun Rua was offered the fight and he turned it down as well – MMASucka.com has learned from Lorenzo Fertitta.

Jones vs Belfort…Machida and Rua turn down title shots!

Belfort got on the horn with Dana White and said that he would step up and fight on one month’s notice. His request was granted and Jones accepted. Belfort was supposed to face Alan Belcher at UFC 153 in October. A new opponent for Belcher has not been decided upon. With a very injury prone Belfort, Chael Sonnen could be on standby.

The other question one has to ask is can Jon Jones get into Canada? With is most recent DUI it might be a risk to try and bring Jones across the 49th parallel. From what a border guard told MMASucka.com, because it was a non violent offense and he didn’t do any jail time he can apply for a one time entry and it’s almost a 50/50 proposition depending on paper work, and the customs officer’s discretion.
