Khabib Nurmagomedov and Daniel Cormier have been two of the best friends in the UFC. While the duo has been spotted pulling each other’s legs and trolling for fun, the innate respect between them has remained the same. Recently, speaking with Lex Fridman, ‘The Eagle’ detailed how the former UFC double champ’s legacy is one of the greatest.
Khabib Nurmagomedov Showered Praise on Daniel Cormier
Nurmagomedov started by saying that Cormier was already an established athlete before transitioning into mixed martial arts. Representing the United States at the Olympics in the 96kg division was in itself a remarkable feat. Yet, Cormier chose to explore more. Testing out his MMA skills in StrikeForce, the UFC legend went on to become the Grand Prix heavyweight champion.
The undefeated UFC fighter then detailed how Cormier had to vigorously cut down on his weight for his best friend, Cain Velasquez. He stated, “In the UFC, he cut down to 205lb to make room for Cain Velasquez because they were best friends. He moved to 205 and they both became champions. One at Light Heavyweight and the other at Heavyweight. Later when Cain lost the heavyweight title, he moved up and won that title too.”
Surely, such a pedigree is bound to earn the respect of fellow fighters. But elaborating further on Cormier’s legacy, Nurmagomedov doubled down on his rivalry with Jon Jones.
Khabib Nurmagomedov Has Surprising Take on DC-Jon Jones Rivalry
The rivalry between Jones and Cormier was undoubtedly one of the fiercest in the UFC. However, despite pushing hard, Cormier struggled against the English fighter. But according to Khabib, this happened because DC was way past his prime.
“He is mostly remembered for his rivalry with one of the greatest if not the greatest, Jon Jones. But by the time he fought Jon Jones, he was no longer at his peak. He was pushing 40,” analyzed Nurmagomedov.
Concluding his statement, ‘The Eagle’ hailed Cormier as one of the greatest UFC fighters “who can truly inspire others.”
