Islam Makhachev is on the hunt for new opponents. After conquering the lightweight division, the 34-year-old has now won consecutive bouts in the welterweight division. While there is a significant controversy about his next fight, Sean O’Malley has come up with a surprise choice.

Soon after the UFC 330 main event concluded, O’Malley made some interesting comments. He proposed how a possible fight between Gaethje and Makhachev can be a treat for the fans. 

In a recent video, ‘Suga’ pointed out, “Justin Gaethje says, ‘F*** it, I’m moving to welterweight for fun and giggles. I’m fighting Islam.’ Especially because Khabib beat Gaethje in the past, it would be a fun fight to watch.”

Surely, on paper, the fight looks interesting. Currently, Gaethje is the reigning lightweight champion. Putting on an electric display, Gaethje thoroughly dominated Ilia Topuria to win the title. Similarly, Makhachev, too, has proved time and again how sound his wrestling skills are. Thus, with Gaethje’s striking up against Makhachev’s elite wrestling, O’Malley’s proposal sounds interesting. 

Can Islam Makhachev vs. Justin Gaethje Become Reality? 

Makhachev, after his latest win, has been one of the most sought-after fighters. In his own division, the 34-year-old has the likes of Michael Morales and Carlos Prates eager to fight him. In all probability, the welterweight champion will be facing off against Prates ahead of Ramadan. 

On the contrary, Gaethje is freshly crowned the champion. After a banger against Topuria, the lightweight champion, too, would need some time to recover fully. When he comes back, Dana White would surely want him to first defend his title a few times before booking him up for a possible hype-fight. Thus, at the moment, a Makhachev vs. Gaethje face-off seems very much unlikely.
