Ian Garry just had a war with Islam Makhachev. Despite giving it his all, the Irish fighter failed to snatch the UFC welterweight gold from the Dagestani champion. Following the fight, there were many critics who backed Garry to have a bright future ahead. According to Tim Welch, there was always a very low chance of Garry actually succeeding in defeating Makhachev.
Tim Welch Weighs in on Ian Garry’s Chances
Speaking about the fight, Welch was confident that the Irish fighter was not going to beat Makhachev that easily. In fact, the UFC coach also claimed that if the duo met 10 times inside the octagon, Garry would only be able to win four times at the most.
Welch said, “If Ian fought Islam 10 times, he would win 4 times.”
Speaking with BedTime MMA, the host immediately agreed with the UFC coach. They pointed out that despite all the talk about Garry pulling off an upset, it was Makhachev who held the upper hand. BedTime MMA also noted how Makhachev's vicious head kick was a surprise element.
Henry Cejudo Doesn't Think Ian Garry will get Title Shot Again
The former UFC champion has a bad feeling about Garry's future as a top UFC star. While his in-octagon skills might be impressive, Cejudo is not impressed with his ability to sell a high-profile fight.
In a recent statement, Cejudo opined, “He didn't really sell the fight and it was just too kumbaya and whatnot. It was ridiculous. ... lan Garry just missed all the boxes."
Garry was heavily criticized for being too respectful towards his opponent. After each round, he was spotted hugging Makhachev, which most of the critics felt was unnecessary. Even the UFC CEO Dana White felt that Garry lacked the much-needed killer instinct to win the championship.
