UFC Lightweight Sends Defiant Message After First KO Loss at Home

On paper, the co-main event of UFC Paris had all the makings of an action-packed thriller. Behind the headlining Dan Hooker vs. Salahdine Parnasse clash, French lightweights Fares Ziam and Axel Sola squared off in an all-out mano-a-mano, with Ziam fighting from an orthodox stance and Sola bringing the southpaw challenge.

Unfortunately for “The Smile Killer,” the homecoming turned into a nightmare. Sola flatlined Ziam in front of the French crowd at the Accor Arena, handing him the first knockout loss of his career in brutal fashion.

Yet, rather than dwell on the defeat, Ziam has chosen to accept the harsh reality of MMA. The UFC lightweight has broken his silence with a powerful message, promising to take the time he needs before returning “even stronger.”

Fares Ziam Accepts First Career KO at UFC Paris

For 29-year-old Ziam, the loss to Sola was a first in more ways than one. The French lightweight had never been stopped by knockout before Saturday night, making the sudden finish at UFC Paris a particularly harsh chapter in an otherwise solid UFC run.

Entering the bout on an 18-5 professional record, Ziam had established himself as a seasoned presence at 155 pounds. He had also put together six consecutive victories before dropping a decision to Tom Nolan in June. The defeat to Sola now leaves him on his first two-fight losing streak since joining the UFC.

Still, there was no bitterness in Ziam’s reaction. Instead, he took responsibility and showed appreciation for the man who delivered it. Addressing his fans, Ziam wrote on Instagram:

“Yesterday, I experienced my first knockout. That’s the reality of MMA. Some days you win, some days you lose. I know the rules of this sport, and I accept them. Congratulations to Axel on his victory, as well as for the respect and conduct he showed both before and after the fight.”

Fares Ziam Will Take His Time Coming Back

As per the Google translation, the Frenchman also made it clear that he has no intention of rushing his return. After nearly six years competing inside the Octagon, the 29-year-old plans to take whatever time he needs before getting back to work.

“Now, I’m going to take the time I need to come back even stronger,” Ziam added.

Meanwhile, Sola's stock could hardly be higher. The 13-1-1 French prospect improved to 3-1 inside the UFC and has now finished his last two opponents inside the opening round. 

Axel Sola Turns French Showdown Into One-Punch Finish

For one, the fight itself did not initially appear to be heading toward such an abrupt ending. Ziam looked comfortable working from range in the opening exchanges, using his kicks to keep Sola at the end of his attacks. 

On the other hand, Sola, fighting from the opposite stance, was patient and appeared content to wait for an opportunity rather than forcing the action. That opening arrived just 1:40 into the first round.

As the two Frenchmen exchanged in close quarters, Ziam committed to an elbow. Sola answered with a devastating overhand that landed clean. The punch sent Ziam unconscious to the canvas, prompting the referee to intervene.

The finish handed Sola the biggest victory of his career and gave the Accor Arena crowd a memorable moment. More importantly, it continued a remarkable run for the young lightweight. Sola entered Paris at 12-1-1 and was coming off a first-round submission of Ismael Bonfim in July. 

Yet, despite the overwhelming win, Sola was also quick to give his opponent his due after the fight. “Fares is a f**king great fighter,” Sola said. “Bring your support for him. I hope you like my performance. My job is only to say yes to the matchmakers so I'm waiting on the offer.”

Meanwhile, UFC Lightweight king Justin Gaethje came in support, offering a brief yet deep message in the comments. He wrote, "We chose a crazy game, brother. See you soon." 

For Ziam, though, the road back now begins with recovery.
