PFL 1 Prelims: First-Round Stoppages Galore

The PFL 1 prelims kicked off with a handful of bouts in the promotion’s heavyweight and featherweight divisions. Each winner receives three points in their division’s regular season standings. If they win via stoppage, they earn 1-3 additional points depending on the round. Three more points are awarded for a first round finish, two for a second round, and one for a third.

Winners

Kevin Tiller (6 Points)

Tiller earned six of his own points with a knockout win over Caio Alencar. The Brazilian scored an early takedown but was unable to do much with it. Referee Dan Mirgliaotta stood them up, which was the beginning of the end for Alencar. Tiller landed a devastating punch that put Alencar down for a couple of minutes.

Steven Siler (6 Points)

Siler won and did it in style with a comeback of the year candidate. Magomed Idrisov nearly had put Siler unconscious with ground and pound. Siler was able to recover but then continued to get hit hard in the stand-up by Idrisov. The Russian then went for a takedown to try and ride out the round, but Siler caught him in a triangle to end the fight with 41 seconds remaining in the first round. Siler caught up to de Almeida with six points of his own.

Alexandre de Almeida (6 Points)

The Brazilian dispatched of Lee Coville in 1:22 with a first-round armbar. That came soon after de Almeida stung Coville in the stand-up with some hard punches. He jumps out to an early lead in the featherweight standings.

Francimar Barroso (6 Points)

The heavyweight fight between Barroso and Daniel Gallemore didn’t get out of the first round. After fun, back-and-forth action, Barroso was able to shut one of Gallemore’s eyes, prompting a doctor stoppage. The win plus the first-round TKO earned the UFC veteran the maximum of six points in the heavyweight standings.

“PFL beware,” Barroso told Bas Rutten through a translator after the fight.

Nazareno Malegarie (3 Points)

Malegarie took a unanimous decision over Marcos Galvao to improve to 1-0 in the PFL featherweight tournament. It was the first fight of the night to go the distance. “El Tigre” improved to 35-4 overall, and the slight favorite notched three points in his weight class. He slightly out-landed Galvao in the first two rounds, mixing in a takedown, in order to get the nod on the scorecards.

Jared Rosholt (3 Points)

Rosholt was able to suffocate Valdrin Istrefi with a ground control-based attack. The unanimous decision win put Rosholt on the board with three points.
