Submission Underground 15 Results

Submission Underground 15 is taking place today and by all indications, it should be another great grappling event. You can see the results of their last event right here.  In the feature bout of the evening champion, Craig Jones will be facing off with Gabriel Checco, winner of three straight SUG contests.

In a feature bout, recent UFC performer Jessica Eye will be taking on Amanda Loewen who has competed in the Portland area going 4-0 in amateur MMA bouts and won her grappling debut via triangle choke against Elizabeth Mitrovic.

Sunday’s card will also feature an eight-man tournament to crown the next challenger for the SUG title currently held by Craig Jones. In the third fight of the night, Nathan Orchard will battle Roberto Jimenez in a match many felt could happen in the finals. That said, they’ll meet in the first round, in a contest that could determine the next title challenger.

Mason Fowler def. Roberto Jimenez via Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) in Overtime – Tournament Final

The main event started with the winner earning ten thousand dollars and a shot at Craig Jones at Submission Underground 16. Jimenez pulled guard and tried to reach for a leg but Fowler was having none of it. They had a couple of slick exchanges but neither man was able to set up any dangerous subs. We head to overtime.

It looks like Fowler won the toss and will take the back first. Fowler escapes very quickly. Roberto Jimenez got his back taken in the bottom of the overtime and gets stuck in a rear-naked choke. He’s forced to tap and Mason Fowler is the tournament champion and will be next in line for Craig Jones. They will meet on July 12th at Submission Underground 16.

Craig Jones def. Gabriel Checco via Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) in Overtime – SUG Championship

The championship match starts and Craig Jones sits down giving Checco top position. Craig Jones sweeps Gabriel Checco and gained top position. Craig Jones reaches for a leg but Checco defends by grabbing his own foot and moving it. Clevel defense from Gabriel Checco. Checco did a great job defensively but found himself mounted. Gabriel Checco rolls but got stuck in a guillotine but Jones lets it go. We head to overtime. Craig Jones submits Checco at 0:15 via Rear Naked Choke and then escapes in the bottom of the overtime round to win and keep his title.

Amanda Loewen def. Jessica Eye via Submission (Armbar) in Overtime

Jessica Eye is in the SUG cage a week removed from her main event defeat in the UFC to Cynthia Calvillo. Eye secured the top position early and worked for a submission. Jessica had top control for much of the round but nobody was able to secure any submission attempts. Time expired and we head to overtime. Jessica Eye has offense first but Loewen escaped and went for the armbar position in the bottom of the overtime period. She controlled the arm and forced the tap, winning via armbar.

Roberto Jimenez def. Hunter Colvin via Sub (Triangle Choke) at 0:51 – Semi-Final

Great scramble to start the contest. Roberto Jimenez gains top position but Colvin slams him, which only tightens the Triangle Choke. This one is over, Roberto Jimenez forces the tap and advances to the finals.

Mason Fowler def. Kody Steele via Sub (Rear-Naked Choke) in OT- Semi-Final

The winner of this heads into the finals for ten thousand dollars and a shot at Craig Jones. Mason Fowler went for a Guillotine but it was well defended by Steele. Interesting match that saw both grapplers on their feet for the entirety of regulation. As they headed into overtime, Steele had top first and took the back immediately. Fowler escapes and took the offensive position. Fowler secures a Rear-Naked Choke and gets the tap, earning the victory and will compete in the final.

Hunter Colvin def. Adam Bradley via submission (Rear-Naked Choke) in OT

Hunter Colvin and Adam Bradley meet up for a shot at the last semi-final and an opportunity to face Roberto Jimenez. Adam Bradley was caught in an armbar early but is able to escape and both men get back to their feet. Adam Bradley showed good composure and flexibility. This one heads into overtime. Adam Bradley was up first on offense and selected the armbar. Adam Bradley transition to a triangle but Hunter Colvin escaped. Colvin will have his go now offensively. Hunter Colvin locked in a rear-naked choke and earned the submission victory.

Roberto Jimenez def. Nate Orchard via submission (Triangle Choke) at 3:06

I suspect the winner of this contest could well win the entire tournament. Nate gained top position and was immediately swept into the mount. Nate was able to get back to guard and then up to his feet. Roberto Jimenez showed some amazing transitions and maintained top control for most of the round. Jimenez tried for a topside triangle and Jimenez rolled him over and locked the choke in deeper. Jimenez forces the tap. Great match and Roberto Jimenez looked really good heading into the semi-finals.

Mason Fowler def. Warren Brooks via Submission (Armbar) in Overtime

Warren Brooks dropped to guard and Fowler immediately took the back and gets both hooks in. Chael Sonnen explains that this is a trap that Warren Brooks likes to utilize. Mason spins for a guillotine but Brooks quickly escaped. Brooks had a decisive size advantage and looked to have fifty plus pounds on Fowler. The fight went to the time limit and we head to overtime. Mason Fowler escapes the armbar in less than three seconds. Fowler taps Warren Brooks with an armbar in overtime.

Kody Steele def. Andy Valera via Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) in Overtime

High pace contest to kick off the event. First-round tournament contest with the winner moving on the semi-final. Andy Valera with the Showtime move, kicking off the cage and then flipping for the takedown. Fun to watch but doesn’t translate into much offense. The two fighters head to overtime. Steele escapes pretty quickly and then maintains control and eventually forces Valera to tap to a rear-naked choke.
