US Sumo Open Set for October 2

With Grand Sumo’s September basho right around the corner, USA Sumo announced earlier this week that the 2021 US Sumo Open will be held on October 2nd at the Terasaki Budokan Center in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, California.

US Sumo Open Returns

With the return of the US Sumo Open, fans will have a new venue. The tournament’s traditional venue, the Walter Pyramid that seats about 5,000, is yet to allow large-scale events in light of Covid-19. The tournament’s new venue, the Terasaki Budokan Center, has an approximate capacity of 1,000. With last year’s tournament being next to zero in terms of attendance, fans will be delighted to see that seating is back to pre-Covid levels. Considering Covid-19, fans in attendance will be asked to always wear a mask unless they are consuming food or drink.

Competition

The US Sumo Open is a showcase style tournament that allows fans to enjoy the sport of sumo in the Western Hemisphere. The tournament features athletes from across the globe, having represented 40 different countries to date. Famed, Mongolian sumo wrestler Byamba competed from 2007-2019 at the US Sumo Open, having amassed an astonishing record of 110-7. From 2007-2014, Byamba won the men’s heavyweight tournament.

The tournament is broken down into gender and weight class categories. Men’s competition’s lightest weight class is lightweight; competitors weighing up to 188 lbs. may compete in this category. Men’s heavyweight competition is for competitors weighting no less than 254 lbs. There are also men’s middleweight and light heavyweight competition to fill the weight backets in between.

Women’s competition is held at lightweight (~144 lbs.), middleweight (~161 lbs.), light heavyweight (~177 lbs.), and heavyweight (177 lbs. +).

2021 US Sumo Open

The 21st annual US Sumo Open is right around the corner. Tickets are live and available at US Sumo’s website.
