T.J. Grant (21-5) was expected to face off against Benson Henderson (19-3) in the main event at UFC 164, however a concussion forced him out of the bout. In stepped Anthony Pettis (17-2) who ultimately proved he had Henderson’s number and took the UFC lightweight title away from him via first round armbar.
T.J. Grant will get next title shot against Anthony Pettis
“Showtime” underwent an MRI on Tuesday to assess a knee injury which occurred during the main event bout. Although not sure what the results of the MRI were, Yahoo! Sports’ Kevin Iole reported via Twitter that UFC President Dana White has said Grant will get the next title shot at Pettis.
It looks as if the super-fight that Pettis wanted with featherweight champion Jose Aldo (23-1) will be put on the back-burner, as Grant has earned his shot.
Grant went from an average welterweight to an unstoppable lightweight. Since making the move from 170-pounds down to 155-pounds the native of Nova Scotia has gone 5-0. Most recently Grant stopped Gray Maynard in the very first round at UFC 160 in May.
No word on the timeframe of Pettis’ injury, but it looks like Grant will be his first test as the 155-pound UFC champion.
