B.J. Penn vs. Clay Guida UFC 237

Legendary former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion B.J. Penn once again steps into the octagon. The former 2 division champion looks for his first win since 2010 when he defeated Matt Hughes. MMA Fighting’s Guilherme Cruz reported that Penn is set to face fellow veteran Clay Guida at UFC 237. UFC 237 is expected to be headlined by the strawweight title fight between champion Rose Namajunas and Jesica Andrade.

Penn’s dramatic decline

‘The Prodigy’ is in the midst of a six-fight skid. Of which he recently lost for the first time by submission. This came at the hands of Ryan Hall at UFC 232.

Penn’s Hall of Fame career has been littered with highlight victories. The most notable of which is his UFC 46 win over Matt Hughes. In the rival’s first meeting, Penn won by submission to claim his first UFC belt over an MMA legend in his prime.

Over the course of his long and storied UFC career, Penn has absorbed the most head strikes in UFC history (1,168).

Guida’s turbulent tenure

Guida’s last octagon performance was at UFC 225 where he was submitted via guillotine choke by Charles Oliveira. ‘The Carpenter’ was on a two-fight win streak prior to this bout. This included a highlight reel knock out of submission artist Joe Lauzon.

Guida holds wins over former UFC champions Rafael Dos Anjos and Anthony Pettis among other notable opponents. Names such as Nate Diaz, Josh Thompson, and Takanori Gomi. Despite this series of impressive victories Guida has never exceeded a win streak of 4 fights and will be looking to add another scalp to his already extensive hit list.
