The UFC bantamweight division’s Andre Ewell has spoken out about the upcoming short notice fight he has with #13 ranked Cody Stamann. Ewell has bounced back from a loss to Marlon Vera with two closely fought decision victories over Jonathan Martinez and Irwin Rivera. Despite Stamann’s strong performances lately, including a very good showing against the #14 ranked Song Yadong that ended up as a draw, Ewell is confident about his grappling chops:

“I don’t want to say it’s short notice for me; the fact is, I’ve been training this whole time for nothing but wrestlers because my weight class is all wrestlers. So, in reality, he has a short-notice fight with me: how is he going to adjust to me.”

Andre Ewell: Managing COVID

The fight also comes as a welcome relief for Andre Ewell, who wishes to keep a high pace in terms of fighting and training has been hindered by COVID-19:

“It means a lot to get back in there because I’m basically born to fight. I’m a fighter; I was raised to fight. During the whole COVID [situation], you have to end up maneuvering and there are chances you may not be able to fight or there’s stuff that becomes static. Now, I know I’m not the only fighter feeling that way, so for me to be able to end up jumping back in the cage and dance, it’s a blessing. I’m a very positive guy with a lot of energy to pass through the world with smiles, so for me to be in the cage, that’s automatically a win in my book.”

Ewell sees the fight as an important step forward for him in the highly competitive bantamweight division:

“I want to be called ‘Number 13.’ That’s gonna be my new name after I beat him. I’m gonna be called ‘Number 13.
