Submission Underground returns tonight with a special Halloween event: Submission Underground 28. The card is stacked from top to bottom, with an accomplished newcomer making his debut against a fan favorite in the main event.
Quintet and Who’s Number One competitor Haisam Rida is a new name to the Submission Underground promotion, and provides a mix of size and athleticism that could cause problems for any of the promotion’s competitors. The Japan-based Ghanian will face Andy Varela, a mainstay of Submission Underground who has gone 2-1 in the promotion since losing to Mason Fowler in a title bout at Submission Underground 22.
The co-main event features a gi match between Aaron Tiegs, who is undefeated in Submission Underground, and Guilherme “Bomba” Vasconcelos, a Bellator veteran who competed at the inaugural Submission Underground event. Vasconcelos, a former boyfriend of pop star Demi Lovato, has not competed in MMA or grappling since 2019, while Tiegs looks for his eighth SUG win.
One-time UFC interim lightweight title challenger Kevin Lee makes his Submission Underground debut as well. His opponent is former Bellator featherweight Cris Lencioni, who most recently defeated Zack Schneider at SUG’s last event, Submission Underground 27. This match is exciting both in terms of the grappling itself and the personalities involved.
The lone women’s match on the card features women’s MMA pioneer Tara LaRosa taking on Juliana “Killer” Miller, who is 2-1 in MMA and a veteran of Invicta FC, but also has experience in grappling, most recently at new women’s only grappling promotion Medusa. LaRosa will still have a professional combat sports experience advantage, as well as a definitive size advantage.
