A Payday Loan, a Mother's Belief, and a ONE World Title: A Rare Side of Enkh-Orgil Baatarkhuu
Reigning ONE Bantamweight MMA World Champion Enkh-Orgil Baatarkhuu did not grow up dreaming of the ONE Championship ring. He grew up herding animals and collecting fuel in Khovd, Mongolia.
On Friday, July 31, he makes his first title defense against undefeated Azerbaijani-Russian submission machine Elbek Alyshov in the main event of The Inner Circle 24, streaming exclusively on live.onefc.com from Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
Baatarkhuu claimed the ONE Bantamweight MMA World Title last December with a submission victory over Fabricio Andrade, becoming the second Mongolian to win ONE World Title gold after his mentor and guru Narantungalag "Tungaa" Jadambaa.

Baatarkhuu Grew Up Herding Animals and Riding Horses
Life in Khovd, a remote province in western Mongolia, bears no resemblance to the world of professional MMA, but it produced one of the sport's most determined champions.
"I grew up herding sheep and goats in the beautiful landscape, riding horses, fetching water from the river, and collecting dried cow dung as fuel. Just like any other Mongolian boy," Baatarkhuu recalled.
The 37-year-old has also stepped beyond combat sports, appearing on Netflix's Physical: Asia show, giving global audiences a glimpse of the man behind the champion.
The Netflix Star’s Mother Took a Payday Loan to Fund His First Competition
The sacrifices behind Baatarkhuu's career did not begin with his own hard work. They began with his mother, who made a significant financial commitment to give her son the chance to discover what he was capable of as a young competitor in Ulaanbaatar.
"My mother was my biggest supporter. When I went to Ulaanbaatar to take part in my first taekwondo competition, my mother took out a payday loan and paid for my travel expenses. For a poor family like ours, taking a payday loan means making a lot of sacrifices," he explained.
The Mongolian owns a 14-3 career record, a 7-1 ONE promotional resume that includes five finishes, and the submission expertise that produced his title-winning performance last December. He will be tested against a challenger who brings a perfect 10-0 career record and a 2-0 ONE mark into the bantamweight title fight.
Baatarkhuu Grew Up Wrestling and Idolizing Action Stars
The fighting spirit that drives Baatarkhuu inside the ring has deep roots in Mongolian culture. Wrestling is not simply a sport in Mongolia. It is a tradition woven into daily life, and the young boy from Khovd embraced it alongside a set of action movie heroes who gave him a vision for what he wanted to become.
"One of the daily activities for a normal Mongolian boy is to wrestle, as we have a fighting spirit in our blood. I liked wrestling and fighting and wanted to be like my idols on TV – Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. I wanted to look like them. I wanted to be ripped," he said.
The boy who watched action stars on a screen in Khovd is now a ONE World Champion making his first title defense on the global stage. Alyshov's unbeaten record makes him a credible threat to that status, but a champion shaped by Mongolian wrestling culture, a mother's sacrifice, and the relentless drive to become his own version of the heroes he grew up watching is a formidable obstacle for any challenger on July 31.
