Anthony Smith’s First Post-Arrest Statement Gets ‘Awkward’ As He Says, ‘Character Is Revealed in Chaos’

Back in July, Anthony Smith was arrested on felony charges, including domestic violence, making terroristic threats, and false imprisonment. Since then, his wife has come to his defense before he entered a guilty plea. 

Recently, he made official remarks on his arrest.

"Character is revealed in chaos." Those were Smith's aforementioned words in what was a rather brief statement.  However, for some of Smith's friends and fellow fighters, the post was simply a reason to show support. For others online, though, those words landed very differently given the serious allegations Smith is facing now.

Comedian and podcaster Theo Von became one of the many first responders to usher in their love and support. He wrote, "love u champ. praying for you and your family." 43-year-old former UFC welterweight Alan Jouban appeared relieved to see Smith reunited with his family.

He noted, "Dude! This puts a smile on my face. Happy you and your family are all together again." Meanwhile, UFC’s famed commentator, Jon Anik, reacted with a heart emoji, while Laura Sanko wrote, "This is everything!" Jake Shields also chimed in with a brief comment -  "Glad to see it."

Others, including former LHW title holder Jamahal Hill, CM Punk, and Brendan Schaub, offered their support with heart emojis.

To summarize the reactions and responses. It was, in many ways, the response one might expect from people who know the 38-year-old personally. To them, the post appeared to represent something far more personal (a family reunited) than a legal case playing out in public.

Public Opinion Different Matter 

Once the comments moved beyond Smith's inner circle, the tone changed considerably. One fan took particular issue with Smith's line about character being revealed in chaos, noting, "Dude tried to run over his wife, threatened to kill her. A lot of character was revealed during that chaos..."

A second netizen kept it direct -  "Did you really try and run over the Wifey? Honest question? We all make mistakes but I want to hear it..." Among the hordes of words, there was sarcasm, too. One commenter wrote, "On paper he wins the legal case," a clear callback to Smith's old habit of describing himself as the better fighter "on paper."

That said, not everyone was against him. One of his fans came to the fighter’s defense, arguing, "Media spins things to make people look evil, your family and friends are the only ones who matter, let the haters hate from behind a screen."

Why Anthony Smith is Facing Multiple Felony Charges

Smith's statement, though brief, comes less than a month after his July 26 arrest in Nebraska following an alleged incident involving his wife. According to allegations outlined by prosecutors, Smith and his wife were involved in an altercation at a bar in Gretna. 

Days after his arrest, the Sarpy County District Attorney’s Office alleged that Smith threatened to kill her if she did not get into his vehicle and go home with him. In addition, prosecutors further suggested that “Lionheart” grabbed and pushed his partner into the vehicle. 

In fact, according to authorities, at one point during the drive, Mikhala Renee Newman (Smith’s wife, who is seen alongside him in the latest post) reportedly managed to get out. Smith was then accused of continuing to make threats while demanding that she get back inside.

The situation allegedly escalated again after they arrived home. Investigators say that the Texan had attempted multiple times to strike his wife with his vehicle, fortunately she was reportedly able to avoid being hit.

From a litigator’s standpoint, Smith has been charged with terroristic threats, two counts of first-degree false imprisonment, and an attempted felony charge. He has pleaded not guilty, and the case remains pending, meaning the allegations have not been proven in court.

Anthony Smith's Wife's Comments Add Layer to Story 

Making matters more intriguing is the fact that Smith’s wife came out publicly to defend him. In her own statement, she said she was safe and described him as a “good man,” a “great” father, and an “incredible” husband, while claiming she had called for help because she was concerned that Smith might harm himself.

Now, that context imatters as to why Smith's post has the fandom skeptical, some even calling the whole thing a byzantine matter.
