Carlos Prates clarifies why he will be getting the first shot at welterweight gold before Michael Morales.

A lot of buzz is going around in the welterweight division at the moment. With Islam Makhachev ready to defend his title again, there are a number of contenders that are in contention. But the two most popular names doing the rounds are Carlos Prates and Michael Morales. Reflecting on the topic, the Brazilian UFC star analyzed why Morales will not get the title shot next.

Carlos Prates Confident About His Contender Status

During UFC 330, both Morales and Prates were present in the crowd. As soon as Makhachev defeated Ian Garry, the camera panned to both fighters. Speaking with Ariel Helwani in a recent interaction, Prates pointed out that he has signed a brand new 8-fight deal with Dana White’s promotion. The 33-year-old fighter also claimed that he was promised a title shot next.

“I'm the next for the title. I think gonna fight maybe Belal Muhammad, or another fighter. But he needs to fight one more,” said Prates.

The Brazilian star had previously sounded confident as well. At the UFC 330 event, Prates showed up in a tee which read ‘I’m Next.’  Such a statement coming from Prates will surely amp up the rivalry between the two.

Carlos Prates Gave a Stern Reply to Michael Morales

After UFC 330, the back and forth between the two fighters has continued. Recently, there were claims about whether ‘The Nightmare’ was scared to face Morales. Such a consensus did not go well, and the Brazilian had a prompt reply for his counterpart.

Prates said, “You say I am scared to fight you. I am not scared of a fight with you; I am the No. 1 contender, so I want to fight for the belt. The UFC never offered me a fight against you. If they offered me the fight, of course I would knock you out really fast, in the first round. So don't worry, you are going to fight and I am going to knock you out. But you will have to wait until I get my belt, and then we can fight."

Surely, there’s no telling that the rivalry is heating up. The interesting thing to see now is who really gets their title shot first.
