Chael Sonnen dissects Darren Till vs. Yoel Romero bare-knuckle boxing match of UFC veterans at BKFC 94 Manchester

Yoel Romero and Darren Till appear to have piqued the interest of the vast majority of combat sports fans and experts. Romero and Till are set to clash in a bare-knuckle boxing match under the BKFC (Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship) promotional banner. 

MMA fighter-turned-analyst Chael Sonnen, who himself is hailed as one of the biggest stars in UFC history, has now chimed in with an in-depth breakdown of the fight. 

"The American Gangster" suggested that Till possesses the skill to out-strike his Cuban counterpart in every round. Nevertheless, Sonnen warned the Englishman about Romero's tricky rope-a-dope and sprint strategy. 

Ex-UFC star and BKFC 94 Manchester headliner Yoel Romero's long and storied combat sports career

Yoel Romero is often hailed for his extraordinary longevity as a combat sports athlete. Born in and representing Cuba, the disciplined martial artist secured a silver medal in the 85 kg category in the sport of freestyle wrestling at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. 

Additionally, Romero notched several other accolades in the wrestling realm before transitioning to MMA. He wreaked havoc in the mixed martial arts sphere, blazing a trail of destruction en route to the top. 

Romero challenged for the interim UFC middleweight belt, the UFC middleweight title, as well as for the Bellator MMA light heavyweight championship over the course of his MMA career -- coming up short on the scorecards each time.

Regardless, his durability and meteoric rise, despite starting MMA comparatively late in his athletic career, elicited widespread laudation. Romero currently boasts a professional MMA record of 17-7.

He bagged 14 victories via KO/TKO and three by decision. On the other hand, he suffered just one KO/TKO defeat, a KO loss against Rafael Cavalcante at light heavyweight early in his MMA career. The Cuban-American athlete lost six bouts by way of decision.

Moreover, Romero has a pair of KO/TKO wins to his name in ex-UFC star and BKFC King of Violence champion Mike Perry's Dirty Boxing Championship hybrid boxing promotion.

"Soldier of God" has also competed in submission grappling. He recently made waves with his freestyle wrestling matches in the RAF (Real American Freestyle) wrestling promotion as well. 

Chael Sonnen cautions Darren Till about Yoel Romero's risky strategy ahead of their bare-knuckle boxing match at BKFC 94 Manchester

Akin to Yoel Romero, Darren Till is also no stranger to having fought for UFC championship gold. "The Gorilla" challenged for the UFC welterweight title during his time with the MMA promotion but fell via submission and subsequently moved to the middleweight division.

Till (18-5-1 MMA) last competed in the sport in December of 2022, losing a back-and-forth clash against future UFC middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis. The Liverpudlian later laced up the professional boxing gloves and made his bare-knuckle boxing debut, too. 

Presently, Romero and Till are scheduled to clash in a much-awaited bare-knuckle boxing match, which would headline BKFC 94 Manchester at the AO Arena in the city of Manchester in the United Kingdom on September 26. 

Taking to his official YouTube channel, Chael Sonnen alluded to the gargantuan interest that the BKFC matchup's announcement has generated from fight fans and experts.

A key element has been the weight at which it'll be contested, as it's still listed as a cruiserweight match on the official BKFC website. Alternatively, it's been advertised as a 190-pound catchweight bout, while an official poster on the BKFC's Instagram handle has it as a light heavyweight bout.

All of it has served to thicken the plot. Many believe that Romero -- whose pair of bare-knuckle boxing matches came at heavyweight -- might be depleted if made to cut all the way down to light heavyweight (which is 185 pounds in the BKFC), cruiserweight (205 pounds), or even to the 190-pound catchweight limit. 

Sonnen referenced the variables at play and underscored that Darren Till could earn the distinction of being the first fighter to truly dominate Yoel Romero. He stated: 

"Darren Till could pick Yoel apart. Darren Till could be the one guy ever to make Yoel look bad. Darren Till's got reach. He's got combinations. And he's faster. He's also going to have a built-in higher level of conditioning. Why? Because Yoel lets everybody think they have conditioning." 

Sonnen drew attention to a point many have highlighted over the years, which is Romero's risky strategy of lulling his opponents into a false sense of security and conserving his own endurance, only to eventually unleash an explosive attack. He recounted that Romero has effectively employed the strategy across multiple combat sports he's partaken in. 

The fight game expert said, "It was a trick. It's a trap. He (Yoel Romero) is trapping you from the minute that whistle blows." 

Sonnen mistated the 49-year-old Romero's age; however, he insinuated that perhaps the years of wear and tear and age might finally catch up to the Cuban athletic specimen against the 33-year-old Till. He noted: 

"He's got a sprint. Is his sprint at 44 years old good enough to take out the opponent across him? That's what the whole match is about. It's not about anything else." 

Underlining Romero's perilous strategy of risking a points defeat to set up a late knockout/domination of his opponent, Sonnen warned that Till must beware of the explosive onslaught that his formidable foe could use at any time. 

Sonnen explained, "When Yoel rope-a-dopes you and realizes there's only so much time on the clock, and he's now going to give you 30 seconds of hell -- at 44 years old, with all his size, and all his muscle, and all his experience, is that 30 seconds of hell something you can withstand after exerting five rounds of energy?" 

Furthermore, "The Bad Guy" affirmed that Till -- a Muay Thai veteran known for his exceptional movement, speed, and overall striking arsenal -- could evade Romero's vaunted KO power and handily beat him inside the BKFC's famed Squared Circle. 

The wrestling savant emphasized that most men would be unable to handle the sudden offensive from Romero, but Till could weather that storm. He also notably advised the British fighter to control the self-doubt that afflicts most fighters and recognize his true potential. 

The 49-year-old appears to be of the view that Till's longer reach would be a difference-maker, whereas Romero's supposed size advantage (in weight) could also considerably influence the fight. 

Expounding upon the high-stakes showdown, Sonnen said, "But Darren Till has the ability. Darren Till could make Yoel look bad... He (Darren Till) can win every round. And he could survive the sprint. But the sprint is coming." 

Darren Till is fresh off his bare-knuckle boxing debut, which witnessed him rally from a knockdown to KO reality television star and Bellator MMA veteran Aaron Chalmers at BKFC 90 in May. 

As for Yoel Romero, he made his bare-knuckle boxing debut at BKFC 80 last year, TKO'ing Theo Doukaus. Romero's next, and most recent, bare-knuckle boxing match was at IBA Bare Knuckle 4 in March. It saw him lose a razor-thin unanimous decision to Russia's Vagab Vagabov, although many fans argued that he ought to have been awarded the win by the judges. 

Intriguingly, Till (1-0 bare-knuckle boxing, 1-0 BKFC) recently spoke at length about his BKFC bare-knuckle boxing match against Romero (1-1 bare-knuckle boxing, 1-0 BKFC). The Briton also opened up about his overall combat sports future.

A number of fans have asserted that it's a crucial fight for both superstars, as its winner could face BKFC icons such as Mike Perry and the first-ever BKFC three-division champion Lorenzo Hunt.
