Demetrious Johnson questions Movsar Evloev’s UFC status despite his undefeated record and upcoming featherweight title fight.
Demetrious Johnson may have built a successful career on technical excellence, but even the former UFC champ seemed stunned by Movsar Evloev's record inside the Octagon. The UFC Hall of Famer recently questioned how the undefeated Russian has stayed with the promotion despite failing to finish any of his UFC opponents.
Despite winning all 10 of his UFC fights with a 20-0 overall record, Johnson cannot help but question his UFC status. Johnson's comments came forth soon after reviewing Evloev's professional record. He quickly realized that the featherweight contender has yet to record a finish in 10 UFC appearances.
Johnson Questions Evloev's Lack of Finishes
Unlike many, Johnson did not shy away or mince his words when discussing Evloev's record.
“Undefeated, 20-0, no finishes, how the f** is he still in the UFC?… Not even a submission?” Johnson exclaimed.
In reality, Evloev's numbers dictate a far more complex story. The 31-year-old may be undefeated through 20 professional fights, winning all 10 of his UFC bouts; however, every one of those wins came by decision.
Despite his lack of finishes, Evloev was able to steadily climb the featherweight rankings by defeating multiple established opponents, including Dan Ige, Aljamain Sterling, Arnold Allen, and Diego Lopes. His consistency has successfully earned him the biggest opportunity of his UFC career.
Evloev Finally Gets His Title Opportunity
Evloev is set to challenge Alexander Volkanovski for the first UFC featherweight championship. That gives him a chance to silence critics who continue to question his ability to produce decisive victories.
His undefeated record remains his strongest argument. While he has not stopped an opponent since joining the UFC, Evloev has consistently found ways to win against high-level competition. Johnson’s criticism, thus, raises an interesting question about what matters more for a contender: an ability to finish fights or an ability to keep winning.
For Evloev, the answer could come inside the Octagon. A victory over Volkanovski would make his undefeated record impossible to ignore, no matter how many decisions came before his title shot.
