Daniel Cormier analyzed how Islam Makhachev’s latest victory is much more special than it seems.
UFC 330 witnessed history. As Islam Makhachev’s hands were raised after the main event, the 34-year-old became the fighter with the longest winning streak in UFC history. With 17 successive wins under his belt, Makhachev has now surpassed Anderson Silva’s record. Looking at the sublime display, Daniel Cormier details why Makhachev should be celebrated even more.
Daniel Cormier Praises Islam Makhachev’s Historic Performance
DC and Makhachev share a very close bond. Oftentimes, the duo could be spotted making fun of each other. Following the win against Ian Garry, the former UFC champ-champ analyzed why the latest welterweight face-off was special.
Cormier stated, “But the reality is, there was a lot of pressure on him to go out there and win this fight. To think about Islam Makhachev winning 17 fights in a row is absolutely insane. No one ever thought that Anderson Silva’s record would be broken, and Islam did that.”
Cormier also added that most fighters would be ecstatic after defending the belt in a second weight class. But since Makhachev is built differently, he will have a critical take on his latest bout. Surely, the fight wasn’t easy. While Makhachev did win by unanimous decision, Garry put up a spirited fight. His takedown defense was superb, which made Makhachev work hard for his victory.
What’s Next For Islam Makhachev?
Makhachev has been dominating the UFC for a long time now. Coming into the welterweight division, the Dagestani initially went over Jack Della Maddalena to clinch his second title. Now, having successfully defended his belt, the 34-year-old is looking for new challenges.
When asked about his potential next opponent, Makhachev pointed out that he would want to face Carlos Prates. Incidentally, Prates, too, had a chilling warning where he claimed he wanted to knock Makhachev out. Thus, with the heat rising, fans would be eager to see what happens next.
