Magomed Ankalaev and Umar Nurmagomedov set to return in UFC Abu Dhabi headlining fights

The UFC has announced the comeback fights of Dagestani grappling savants Magomed Ankalaev and Umar Nurmagomedov.
Magomed Ankalaev and Umar Nurmagomedov have been looking to rebuild momentum and earn title shots in their respective weight classes. The grappling stalwarts -- both of whom hail from Dagestan, Russia -- are now set to compete on the same fight card.
On one hand, the card would mark the 205-pound veteran Ankalaev's return to the octagon for the first time since he suffered the first knockout defeat of his MMA career. On the other hand, it'll be another opportunity for Nurmagomedov to continue his winning ways and possibly insert himself into the title mix at 135 pounds.
Magomed Ankalaev vs. Khalil Rountree Jr. officially announced as UFC Abu Dhabi main event
The UFC Abu Dhabi event is booked to be held at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E., on July 25, 2026.
The UFC, via its official "@ufc" handle on X, has confirmed that a light heavyweight bout between Magomed Ankalaev and Khalil Rountree Jr. will headline the UFC Abu Dhabi fight card.
Ankalaev's most recent octagon appearance witnessed him lose the UFC light heavyweight championship, owing to a first-round TKO loss against Alex Pereira, in October 2025. In his previous fight, he'd outpointed Pereira to capture the title in March 2025.
Meanwhile, Rountree Jr. is coming off a knockout defeat against former UFC light heavyweight champion Jiri Prochazka who he faced late last year. Prior to that matchup, Rountree Jr. had outpointed Jamahal Hall.
Incidentally, the fight that preceded his win over Hill was a title clash against Alex Pereira. Rountree Jr. fell via fourth-round TKO in a back-and-forth war against "Poatan" back in 2024.
All in all, the upcoming UFC Abu Dhabi showdown between Ankalaev and Rountree Jr. is crucial for both fighters. The fight's victor would move one step closer to the UFC light heavyweight championship that's currently held by Carlos Ulberg.
Well, Ulberg himself is recovering from a knee injury amid widespread speculation of a possible interim title fight featuring Paulo Costa.
UFC announces Umar Nurmagomedov vs. David Martinez as co-main event for 2026 Abu Dhabi card
Moreover, the UFC's aforementioned post on X also confirmed the co-headlining match of UFC Abu Dhabi. One-time UFC bantamweight title challenger, Umar Nurmagomedov, will make his long-awaited return in the co-headliner against rising star David Martinez.
The Dagestani fighter suffered his first MMA defeat when he was outpointed by Merab Dvalishvili in their UFC bantamweight title clash in January 2025.
That said, Nurmagomedov bounced back with a unanimous decision victory over Mario Bautista that October. Also, his next, and most recent fight, saw him outpoint ex-UFC flyweight kingpin Deiveson Figueiredo in January 2026.
As for Nurmagomedov's opponent, David Martinez, the Mexican fighter boasts a pair of unanimous decision victories over divisional veterans Rob Font and Marlon Vera. His fight against Vera came in February 2026 and has earned him a co-headlining spot against the fearsome Nurmagomedov.
The clash between Nurmagomedov and Martinez is regarded as a pivotal one in the upper echelons of the UFC bantamweight division.
