Megan Olivi dissects UFC superstar Ilia Topuria's mental comeback after his first MMA loss to Justin Gaethje

Ilia Topuria has been heralded as one of the biggest stars in the UFC in recent years, enjoying a 17-0 unbeaten run since the commencement of his career in the sport of MMA. 

Nevertheless, the 29-year-old's most recent fight witnessed him suffer his first MMA loss, a fourth-round TKO stoppage against veteran UFC fighter Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250 on June 14. 

UFC interviewer and on-screen personality Megan Olivi -- who's long been revered for her journalistic work as well as her analysis of the key happenings in MMA -- has now chimed in on Topuria's setback. 

Olivi suggested that although Topuria would recover from the physical damage he suffered in the fight, the defeat's psychological wounds remain something that could adversely affect him when he returns to the octagon.

During an edition of The Bohnfire podcast hosted by MMA Junkie's Mike Bohn, Megan Olivi expressed her respect for former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Ilia Topuria. 

Upon being asked whose comeback story compels her the most, Olivi stated, "I think for me, it's Ilia. Significant physical injuries. And I always enjoy my interviews with him." 

Moreover, Olivi indicated that Topuria has a confidence about him, which some deem to be cockiness. She noted that it never strikes her as such, adding that his confidence was rooted in his hard work and what his extraordinary MMA record was reflecting at the time. 

She implied that despite losing the back-and-forth fight against Justin Gaethje, Topuria showed a lot in that matchup. Olivi, however, emphasized that we always wonder how a given person would accept being the proverbial nail rather than the hammer.

The UFC interviewer alluded that it remains to be seen how Topuria accepts his first loss, in which he was the one who was dealt the bulk of the punishment. She explained: 

"And I am greatly looking forward to seeing how he recovers mentally -- physically, he'll be fine. But mentally and emotionally, what sort of motivation does this serve? I have no doubt that if he wants to come back, and be great, and avenge his loss, or you know, get his hand raised once again, he will be able to do so."

Olivi added, "I'm just curious about what his perspective looks like and what his motivation looks like after this."

Ilia Topuria displayed interest in a rematch against Justin Gaethje, but the newly crowned UFC lightweight champion has other plans

Ilia Topuria was said to have been afflicted by non-displaced orbital fractures, in addition to dealing with multiple cuts, due to his grueling clash against Justin Gaethje.

"El Matador" immediately called for a rematch against Gaethje. However, his exact comeback timeline remains shrouded in mystery. Many other top-level lightweight contenders have been lobbying to leapfrog Topuria into a title fight against Gaethje. 

Topuria entered UFC Freedom 250 as the UFC lightweight champion, while Gaethje was the interim UFC lightweight titleholder. The Georgian-Spaniard couldn't continue into the fifth and final round, resulting in Gaethje winning via TKO and unifying the belts to be crowned the new UFC lightweight kingpin. 

It marked the first time the American captured undisputed lightweight gold in the UFC. Gaethje previously notched the BMF belt and holds the distinction of being a two-time interim lightweight champ.

Regardless, he'd failed in two past attempts at capturing the lightweight belt -- losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2020 and Charles Oliveira in 2022. 

Considering the variables at play, speculation has abounded that the 37-year-old Gaethje might choose to retire from MMA rather than trying to defend his UFC title and prolong his career, given the wars he's endured inside the octagon.

For his part, "The Highlight" has maintained that he's not interested in facing Topuria in a rematch next.
