One of the world's most elite submission grapplers is finally ready to throw hands. Mikey Musumeci has officially set his sights on mixed martial arts, confirming he aims to make his professional MMA debut by November or December in the flyweight division.
Fresh off a dominant victory over UFC featherweight contender Bryce Mitchell at UFC BJJ, Musumeci made it clear that his time in pure jiu-jitsu has largely run its course. For a competitor who has already conquered virtually every major grappling honor on the planet, the transition to cage fighting represents the ultimate fresh challenge.
"Iā€™ve already won every title Iā€™ve wanted to in jiu jitsu in my weight class, right? So for me to do the same thing over and over, it kind of gets played out, you know?" Musumeci said regarding his decision to move on. "Probably by November, December, I should be going MMA."
Conquering Grappling and Chasing New Gold
It is hard to argue with his logic. The American phenom boasts one of the most decorated resumes in modern submission grappling history. Musumeci is a four-time IBJJF world champion, a former ONE Championship flyweight submission grappling champion, and recently captured the UFC BJJ bantamweight title.
Moving down to 125 pounds for his MMA debut makes plenty of sense given his natural size and frame. While many elite grapplers struggle when strikes, cage control, and wrestling enter the equation, Musumeci's unmatched guard work and relentless submission hunting make him a fascinating prospect.
His recent clash with Mitchell proved he can comfortably handle high-level MMA fighters on the mats, even when dealing with size disadvantages and wild sideline distractions from cornermen like Sean Strickland. Now, the pizza-loving grappling icon will test whether his world-class technique can translate into full-contact combat inside the cage.
