Marking the promotion’s second-ever visit to the city since 2017, UFC Winnipeg brings to the table a bevvy of exciting matchups, including a barnburner main event between Canadian darling Mike Malott and one-time title challenger Gilbert Burns. In the penultimate bout of the night, Kyler Phillips looks to stem the rise of the surging Charles Jourdain.
At one point in time, Burns was recognised as one of the most terrifyingly hard punchers in the entire 170-lb class, nearly stealing the championship after a close encounter with the then incumbent Kamaru Usman back in 2021. Since that time, however, the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu stalwart has struggled to get a victory, losing his four contests in a row.
Entering his eighth tilt in the company since making his debut in 2022, the hype around Ontario’s own Malott has reached an all-time high after he logged a superb triumph over Kevin Holland in his last time out. Should he manage to topple the established Burns, “Proper” will find himself just outside the top ten, making that coveted world championship just a stone’s throw away.
Making his name known to the world following his inclusion on the 27th season of the Ultimate Fighter, Phillips has proven himself to be an up-and-coming prospect, highlighted by his incredible wins over Raoni Barcelos, Pedro Munhoz, and Song Yadong. Although the ranked opposition in his division have stymied his ascension over the past two years, “The Matrix” still boasts one of the more impressive, well-rounded skill sets at bantamweight.
Since suffering two back-to-back defeats to Sean Woodson and Jean Silva in 2024, Jourdain has demonstrated drastic improvements to his game. Winning his last two matches by guillotine choke, “Air” has made it clear that he is a major problem for anyone who gets caught up with him on the ground.
