The former UFC bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili feels confident in capturing the belt from Petr Yan this time, using a different strategy than in their previous bout.
Dvalishvili has confirmed his next fight. The Georgian star is in camp preparing for a trilogy against the Russian champion.
After reflecting on his errors from his last loss to Yan, Dvalishvili seems like a completely different animal, sure that he can reclaim the title.

While the fight is not officially confirmed, Dvalishvili dropped a video from inside the gym stating that he is training for the Yan trilogy. “Today's training camp was very good. We worked on positions, and this is pretty much how I'm going to work against Petr,” he said.
In their rematch, Dvalishvili ate too many counters in an attempt to get a takedown. Reflecting on those mistakes, Dvalishvili said, “Last time when I fought Petr, I was working hard. This time, I'm working smart.”
The ex-champion assured his fans that he would reclaim the crown this time. “I'm going to get a different result, and I'm going to take my belt back,” Dvalishvili concluded.
Dvalishvili vs. Yan: A Lookback Before the Trilogy
Dvalishvili first faced Yan in 2023 at UFC Fight Night 221, when the Georgian was on an incredible eight-fight win streak. Keeping his momentum, he dominated Yan throughout the entire five rounds, landing 147-75 in total strikes and securing 11 takedowns. Ultimately, Dvalishvili received 50-45 scores from all three judges, resulting in a unanimous decision victory.
The rematch was held in 2025 at UFC 323, this time with Dvalishvili's championship on the line. Yan entered the battle with three victories following his defeat to the Georgian. The Russian star seemed sharper this time.
While Dvalishvili tried takedowns without proper setup, Yan countered with strong attacks, revealing Dvalishvili's flaws. Yan won 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47 by unanimous decision.
Yan not only won the title but also ended Dvalishvili's fourteen-fight win streak. Dvalishvili, who is regarded as one of the most active and spectacular champions in UFC history, took a significant loss.
It's brought him back to the gym with something to prove. The match is expected to take place in October 2026. And if Dvalishvili’s words carry any weight, we are in for an amazing shake-up in the UFC’s bantamweight division.
