This time around in Zuhosky's Take, Drew believes UFC CEO Dana White is the biggest winner of UFC Freedom 250

Dana White, UFC CEO, is the most powerful man in MMA. White has overseen the sport's No. 1 promotion for the last 25 years, first as the company's president before becoming its CEO three years ago when the promotion was bought by TKO Group Holdings, its current parent company. Since White assumed his role as president, he's turned the UFC into a global phenomenon.

In the quarter-century that he's led the UFC, Dana White has faced a number of challenges, including a near-bankruptcy of the company in 2001. White and the Fertitta brothers purchased the promotion for a sum of just $2 million (USD.)

At the time of the purchase, MMA was still illegal in much of the United States and athletic commissions would not sanction events. The late John McCain, Republican senator of Arizona, was on a mission to curtail television exposure of UFC and MMA events, going so far as to work with the Federal Communications Commission to stop cards from being broadcast live. Rule changes led McCain, who passed in 2018, to soften his stance on the sport.

UFC Freedom 250 Presents Biggest Challenge for Dana White

About a year ago, during an addressed delivered on the Iowa state fairgrounds in Des Moines, US President Donald Trump,  a longtime friend and colleague of Dana White, mentioned the idea of holding a UFC card on the south lawn of The White House grounds in Washington, DC to commemorate the July 4 holiday in 2026 to commemorate America's 250th birthday. The hinted date of July 4 would not come to pass, however.

In the weeks and months that followed, a series of questions and concerns surrounding the event were levied, including the number of championship contests to be held during the show. While President Trump wanted a card with "eight or nine championship fights" on it, when the bout order was officially revealed on the night of March 6, only six fights would comprise the UFC Freedom 250. A seventh fight between Josh Hokit and Derrick Lewis at heavyweight was added to the show in April at Trump's request.

Unlike most other UFC shows, which take place at indoor arenas, this show would occur outdoors and concerns were raised that inclement weather would play a role in Sunday evening's event.

Dana White Dodges Major Bullet with Brief Weather Delay at Outset of UFC Freedom 250

Initially, the plans for the night were to have seen the event begin at just past 8 pm ET on the south lawn of The White House. Late Sunday afternoon, however, an announcement was made that the event would go into a weather delay due to thunderstorms crossing the region.  Although Dana White mentioned that the card would take place rain or shine at a Friday night press conference, any lightning detected within an eight-mile radius on the evening of the show would cause a weather delay for a minimum of 30 minutes.

Even with the ominous weather forecasts for Sunday in Washington, the weather delay wound up being the only one of the night. Not long before 9 pm ET Sunday, the fights were underway. All told, UFC Freedom 250 was a flawless show as far as finishes were concerned.

Seven fights wound up being contested on the night. Not one required the use of the judges' scorecards.

Dana White Passes Another Test with UFC Freedom 250

Political leanings aside, Dana White is one of the smartest businessmen in all of sports. If there's ever a challenge being thrown his way, you can expect him to meet it.

This is a man who purchased the UFC when it was in dire straits financially and gradually made it a worldwide brand. Within several years, The Ultimate Fighter television series launched on what's now known as Paramount Network, bringing the UFC into more homes for free on television.

When COVID-19 caused sports to temporarily shut down globally in 2020, the UFC was the first company to return to live action through the use of the Meta Apex and Fight Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Other sports had longer pauses in their seasons, but because of Dana White's business sense, he gave fans a respite from the harsh realities of a pandemic.

UFC Freedom 250 was Dana White's biggest test as the company's CEO. His final grade: A-plus.
