UFC 239 has its main event, as the July PPV will feature a showdown between current light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and rising light heavyweight star Thiago Santos. Jones is set to defend his 205 pound title for the second time in 2019, according to Brett Okamoto of ESPN.
Jon Jones vs. Thiago Santos at UFC 239
Jones last stepped inside the octagon against Anthony Smith in March 2, 2019, at UFC 235. Jones won the fight via unanimous decision, after Jones was deducted two points for an illegal knee to a grounded opponent in the fourth round.
Santos, on the other hand, is coming off a win over Jan Blachowicz via TKO (punches) at UFC Fight Night: Blachowicz vs. Santos. “Marreta” is currently riding a three fight win streak after making his light heavyweight debut against Eryk Anders in September of 2018, a match in which he won via TKO (referee stoppage). The fight earned each man a $50,000 bonus, being chosen as Fight of the Night.
Jones has been the UFC’s light heavyweight champion for a large portion of the last eight years, though he has been stripped of the title twice. He will be looking to secure his second title defense of 2019 against a very dangerous striker in Santos, who has been nothing but impressive since making the move to the 205 pound division.
UFC 239 is set to take place at the T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 6, 2019. The card also includes a Women’s Bantamweight title match between current champion Amanda Nunes and Holly Holm, which will serve as the card’s co-main event.
