Matheus Nicolau wins a Controversial Split Decison

Manel Kape came out like in his debut, started slowly. Nicolau landed some solid calf kicks early in the round and secured a takedown from the body lock. Kape did a good job not taking much punishment and when Nicolau jumped for a guillotine, Kape escaped to his feet. Kape was once again taking down after trying a jumping knee. By controlling the action on the canvas and securing a pair of takedowns, Nicolau most certainly won the first round.

It became clear that If Kape is going to find success in the Octagon, he’s going to have to take some chances and be more aggressive offensively. That is exactly what he did in the second round. Kape landed a big right hand that had Nicolau off-balance and on the defensive for the rest of the round. Kape threw jabs, uppercuts, and kicks and landed at almost a 4-1 ratio over Nicolau. It was even as we headed to the third round.

The first half of the third round favored Nicolau but Kape closed the round by repeatedly hitting Nicolau. Kape landed a big knee to the head and followed it up with a series of well-timed punches that seemed to hurt Nicolau. The fight ended with a close third round that i felt swung in the favor of Kape.

Daniel Cormier spoke to Matheus Nicolau after the fight about if he felt he’d done enough to earn the victory. “It’s so good to be here. I feel I could do a lot more, it was a draw for me. It was a close fight. I’m not here to judge, I’m here to fight to the end.”
