With Jake Paul and Ben Askren in the books, celebrity boxing is a very real aspect of the combat sports world in 2021. Perhaps sometime down the line, a celebrity boxing league will even come to fruition.
With this in mind, here are the top five celebrities that we would want to see in the ‘Celebrity Boxing League’.
Shaquille O’Neal
If anybody is a must-see celebrity, it’s Shaq. In fact, it’s hard not to see Shaq. The 4x NBA champion and current sports analyst, Shaquille O’Neal, is no stranger to combat sports. O’Neal has trained in MMA for quite some time and in an interview with Ariel Helwani, Shaq stated he, “loves MMA”. Shaq made an appearance as a guest commentator at BKFC 15 and frequents combat sports events.
As for his fight potential, Shaq’s previous training and physical frame would be something special. Standing at seven foot one with a ninety-one-inch wingspan, Shaq would certainly give most anyone trouble in the boxing ring.
Logan Paul
Logan Paul has a history in boxing. He made his professional debut against fellow YouTuber, KSI, on November 9, 2019. Prior to this bout, the 26-year-old YouTube megastar participated in two exhibition bouts. Obviously, Paul lacks immense boxing skill, but his stardom, physique, and willingness to learn the sport has landed him an exhibition bout with boxing legend, Floyd Mayweather Jr.
This bout was to take place on February 20, 2021 but has been rescheduled and a new date has yet to be released.
Kevin James
Kevin James starred in the 2012 MMA movie, Here Comes the Boom. In the movie, James plays a high school teacher that takes up MMA to help fund the school’s music program. For the movie, James trained in MMA and continues to train in the sport of kickboxing. James’ past training partners include MMA legend, Bas Ruten, and former UFC Middleweight Champion, Chris Weidman.
Wiz Khalifa
Wiz Khalifa made a very impressive physical transformation when he took up MMA training. The rapping star made an appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience where he made note of his training experiences at Unbreakable Performance and how he gained thirty-five pounds through his training and diet transformation. Khalifa’s kickboxing skill can be seen in a variety of videos on YouTube.
D’Brickashaw Ferguson
Offensive tackle might not be the most glamorous position in football, but D’Brickashaw Ferguson shined in his own spotlight during his ten-year NFL career. The fourth pick in the 2008 NFL Draft never missed a game in his professional career and made three appearances in the Pro Bowl. Ferguson trains in Taekwondo and has earned a black belt in karate. Keep in mind, Ferguson is six foot six and is well over three hundred pounds.
And as a Bonus…
Steven Seagal‘s martial arts “skill” has long been the subject of scrutiny. The sixty-nine-year-old actor could obviously no longer prove his “skill” in the boxing ring due to his age, but Seagal could play a critical role as a color commentator for Celebrity Boxing League.
What other must-see celebrities would you want to see step into the boxing ring? What voices would best operate the commentary table for the celebrity boxing league?
