The largest and longest running annual sumo tournament outside of Japan will make its return. USA Sumo will return for its 22nd annual US Sumo Open. The tournament, which will take place on September 10th, will return to one of its old venues, the Walter Pyramid in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, California.
22nd Annual US Sumo Open Set for September 10th
Last year’s event, which was held at the Terasaki Budokan Center, had a show capacity of 1,000 fans. This was an upgrade from the previous year’s capacity, as the 2020 US Sumo Open was held without attendance due to COVID-19 restrictions. This year, the tournament will return to the Walter Pyramid, a venue that can seat approximately 5,000 event goers. As of January 25th, LBSU Athletics is allowing a 50% capacity—approximately 2,500 fillable seats, for events being held at the Walter Pyramid. These precautions are still in place due to COVID-19.
Competition
The event will feature over 100 sumo matches with more than 60 international sumo competitors. In year’s past, the US Sumo Open has featured weight classes and gender categories. These categories will return in the prelimary matches where competitors can earn a spot in the “main event” competition—an openweight class competition stylized like traditional Japanese sumo.
