An incredible matchup of welterweight strikers is expected to take place at UFC 289 on June 10, as Stephen Thompson and Michel Pereira have verbally agreed to throw down. While contracts have not yet been signed, sources close to MMA Sucka have confirmed that the fight is basically a done deal.
Stephen Thompson Returns to Action at UFC 289
The two-time welterweight title challenger “Wonderboy” Thompson is coming off of a Fight of the Year contender, having defeated Kevin Holland in the main event of UFC on ESPN 42 in December. The fourth-round stoppage snapped a two-fight skid where the karateka was outgrappled in back-to-back outings against Gilbert Burns at UFC 264 and Belal Muhammad at UFC Vegas 45. The aforementioned finish was his first since his breakout performance against former champion Johny Hendricks at UFC Fight Night 82. The 40-year-old South Carolinian is currently ranked seventh in the UFC welterweight rankings.
Stephen Thompson Takes on Michel Pereira
The 15th-ranked, 29-year-old Brazilian “Demolidor” Pereira is surging as of late, having won five in a row. The brash Capoeira stylist has toned down his patented flashiness of late, but has seemed to hit his stride with the new, more focused approach. The win streak started with a submission win over Zelim Imadaev, which he then followed up with decision wins over Khaos Williams, Niko Price, Andre Fialho, and finally Santiago Ponzinibbio in his most recent outing at UFC Vegas 55. By the time Pereira steps into the cage at UFC 289, it will have been more than a year since that win.
