Alex Pereira’s UK Seminar Controversy Takes Twist As Organizers Accept Blame

Alex Pereira’s image as a fan favorite recently came under unexpected scrutiny over the weekend after attendees at one of his U.K. appearances accused the former two-division champion of cutting his seminar short.
In so doing, Alex Pereira caught flack for refusing to take photos, leaving fans disappointed despite paid meet-and-greet packages.
Subsequently, the controversy snowballed into an uproar online, with many directing their frustration at “Poatan.” Just as the criticism began gathering unwanted traction, the story took an unexpected turn. The agency responsible for organizing the tour issued a lengthy public statement accepting full responsibility for the confusion, insisting Pereira had done exactly what he had been instructed to do.
Organizers Say Alex Pereira "was not at fault" After Fan Complaints
The clarification has shifted the spotlight away from the Brazilian, raising fresh questions about whether the controversy stemmed from poor planning rather than poor conduct.
For the unversed, the controversy began after fans who attended Pereira's seminar in Keighley, England, claimed they were left without the experience they had paid for. Several attendees alleged the former UFC Middleweight and Light Heavyweight Champion did not stay for photographs or autograph sessions and ended his appearance earlier than expected.
As criticism mounted online, event organizer Joyagear stepped forward to address the situation, taking full responsibility for what it described as a breakdown in communication.
“As the event organizer, Joyagear takes full responsibility for the organization, logistics, communication, and agreed deliverables surrounding these events,” the company said in its statement.
Alex Pereira Told of Seminar, Nothing Else
According to the agency, Pereira was only informed that he was scheduled to conduct a one-hour seminar. The organization stressed that he completed that obligation in full and was never told that individual photographs, autograph signings, or additional meet-and-greet sessions had been advertised as part of the event.
"We want to make one thing very clear: Alex Pereira was not at fault," the statement continued.
The organizers also clarified that Pereira was neither late nor unwilling to engage with fans. Instead, they acknowledged that expectations communicated to ticket holders did not match the instructions given to the 38-year-old.
Addressing the issue, Joyagear later confirmed that all meet-and-greet ticket holders would receive full refunds while apologizing for the inconvenience caused. The company also pledged to review its internal processes to ensure similar communication failures do not occur during the remainder of Pereira's U.K. tour.
Controversy Comes at Difficult Time for "Poatan"
The seminar controversy arrives just weeks after Pereira suffered one of the toughest setbacks of his UFC career. At UFC Freedom 250, the Brazilian moved up to heavyweight in pursuit of history, hoping to become the first fighter to capture UFC titles in three different weight classes.
Standing opposite him was interim heavyweight champion Ciryl Gane, who halted those ambitions with a second-round knockout victory.
Rather than quietly accepting the defeat, Pereira has remained vocal in the aftermath. The former champion has repeatedly argued that referee Herb Dean missed illegal strikes to the back of his head during the fight, suggesting the officiating played a role in the result.
Alex Pereira's Fandom Still Strong After June 14 Defeat
Despite the loss, Pereira's popularity has largely remained intact. His tenacity to chase ambitious challenges, combined with an active schedule that has seen him compete across multiple weight classes while traveling worldwide for fan events, has earned him one of the UFC's most loyal followings.
That is partly why the seminar allegations generated such a strong reaction. For many fans, the accusations seemed out of character for a fighter known for embracing supporters during international appearances.
With the remaining stops on his U.K. tour set to continue, both Pereira and the organizers will be hoping future events reflect the experience fans expected in the first place and leave the focus on the former champion's connection with supporters rather than the confusion that overshadowed his visit to Keighley.
