Dana White Claims Khabib Nurmagomedov Missed Undisputed GOAT Status Only Due to Early Retirement

The debate over the greatest fighter in mixed martial arts history is an endless barber-shop argument that never fails to divide fans and pundits alike. While names like Jon Jones, Georges St-Pierre, and Anderson Silva dominate the conversation, UFC CEO Dana White still believes one legend left the door open purely because of timing: former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Nurmagomedov walked away from combat sports in October 2020 following a second-round submission victory over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254. The win pushed his flawless professional record to 29-0 and marked his third successful lightweight title defense. Despite walking away in his absolute physical prime, Nurmagomedov made a promise to his mother following the passing of his father and head coach, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, ensuring he would never compete inside the Octagon again.

His protégé and longtime training partner, Islam Makhachev, has since taken over the mantle, capturing championship gold, defending the lightweight belt four times, and tying Silva’s legendary 16-fight UFC win streak. Yet, while Makhachev’s resume continues to grow into all-time territory, White remains fixated on what could have been for "The Eagle."

“Obviously, Islam has accomplished a lot more than Khabib because he fought longer,” White said. “Who knows what Khabib would have accomplished if he had stayed in the game? And realistically, if Khabib had done what everybody knows he could have done, he definitely would be the GOAT.”

Nurmagomedov’s dominance was unlike anything the sport had ever seen. Throughout his 13-fight promotional tenure, he barely dropped a single round, dominating elite competition like Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, and Rafael dos Anjos with suffocating grappling.

Former two-division champion Daniel Cormier recently insisted that Nurmagomedov remains the greatest because he made zero mistakes inside the cage, dominating every minute he spent fighting. Rivals like Jones built decade-long dynasties, whereas Nurmagomedov chose family and legacy over extended title defenses.

White has consistently shown immense respect for Nurmagomedov’s decision to retire, even after multiple failed attempts to lure the superstar back for a 30th fight. Still, the UFC boss clearly views the Russian icon as the ultimate "what if" at the pinnacle of mixed martial arts history.
