Jon Jones Predicts Islam Makhachev Will Defeat Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330

The former two-division champion believes Makhachev's elite wrestling will be the deciding factor at UFC 330.
Islam Makhachev faces another major test when he defends his welterweight title against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330. Scheduled to take place on Aug. 15 in Philadelphia, the event will feature the Russian's first title defense after winning the belt against Jack Della Maddalena by unanimous decision in November 2025. Just over a month before the bout, none other than Jon Jones offered his prediction on the fight.
Jon Jones Explains why He Favors Makhachev
Despite being retired for more than a year, "Bones" continues to follow the UFC closely. Speaking to Red Corner MMA, the former two-division champion predicted that Makhachev will retain his title because of his superior wrestling skills.
“I assume that Islam is going to win that one, just because of his wrestling pedigree,” Jon Jones began. “To be able to dictate whether the fight is going to be standing or on the ground is a great gift. Another guy with a strong team behind him and a strong faith. I’m not rooting for anyone in that fight, because I don’t know either one of those guys on a personal level, but I’m assuming that Islam is gonna win. That’s my prediction.”
Sizing Up Islam Makhachev
Makhachev's credentials certainly support Jones' prediction. Widely regarded as one of the UFC's best wrestlers, the champion has built his success through elite takedowns and relentless pressure, recording 13 submission victories in his professional career.
After four title defenses at lightweight, the Russian moved up to welterweight and captured the belt in his divisional debut. He is currently riding a 16-fight winning streak.
UFC 330 a Huge Test for Garry
While Makhachev will be defending his welterweight title for the first time, Garry will be making his first appearance in a UFC championship fight. Since joining the promotion in 2021, the Irishman has compiled an impressive 10-1 UFC record. Now, "The Future" faces the biggest challenge of his career.
