Sam Patterson looks to continue his ascent at 170 next week in Abu Dhabi.

Top welterweight prospect Sam Patterson is looking to get back on track after his first loss in the division next Saturday at UFC Abu Dhabi. However, his desired result won’t come easily, as he prepares to face a grizzled Argentine veteran with over 30 bouts on his record.

Sam Patterson Meets Santiago Ponzinibbio at UFC Abu Dhabi

Coming off just the second loss of his promotional stint to Michael Page in his last time out, Patterson attempts to spring back into the winner’s circle next weekend in Abu Dhabi at UFC Abu Dhabi. In what will be his first fight in four months, the English prodigy is set to trade blows with company luminary Santiago Ponzinibbio on the preliminary portion of the card.

A member of the UFC roster since 2013, Ponzinibbio has been regarded as an elite name in the 170-lb category. Among two separate appearances in the top 15 of the division, “Argentine Dagger” has earned stellar victories over stern competition like Mike Perry, Gunnar Nelson, and future two-time middleweight champion Sean Strickland.

While Ponzinibbio may be one of the oldest members of the welterweight class at 39 years of age, he still possesses a vast amount of professional experience of 39 total matches, with 30 of those scraps being wins.

Despite this massive difference in cage time, Patterson will accept nothing short of absolute domination ahead of his seventh appearance as a UFC fighter. Proven to be a reliable and exciting finisher, the Team Crossface product is gearing up to put himself on the map in front of thousands in the Middle East at UFC Abu Dhabi.

Sam Patterson's First UFC Loss and Move to Welterweight

Earning his contract with the organization back in 2022 after besting Vinicius Cenci on the Contender Series, Patterson undertook his first Octagon assignment at UFC 286. The victory would elude him, though, as he ended up losing to the capable Yanal Ashmouz.

In front of his native England crowd, the hometown hero was only able to land a mere two strikes before being taken down by the then undefeated “Red Fox,” who then proceeded to end the bout by pummeling Patterson with ground-and-pound to score the first-round knockout win.

The setback was a rough one for the young Patterson, as it was the first time he didn’t get his hand raised after a tilt in six years. Following his unsuccessful debut in Europe, he then made the decision to move up 15-lb to welterweight, a weight class he had not fought in since his final fight as an amateur back in 2016.

Boasting a new frame and newfound sense of determination, Patterson impressed in spades in his next contest at UFC 297 by submitting Yohan Lainesse in just two minutes.

Sam Patterson's Welterweight Win Streak, Defeat to Page

Over the next year, Patterson continued to emerge as a promising prospect at 170-lb. Ending 2024 with a staggering first round stoppage over Kiefer Crosbie, the Englishman logged an even more eventful 2025 with another two wins in a row. His most standout moment of the year came against former LFA champion Trey Waters, who had only lost just one scrap in his professional career to current welterweight contender Gabriel Bonfim.

Needing just three minutes to get the job done, Patterson sealed “The Truth”’s fate by flooring Waters with a monstrous right hook, raising his 170-lb win streak to 4-0.

Earning a tremendous step up in competition in his freshman bout of 2026, Patterson was booked to take on previous Bellator icon Michael Page at UFC Fight Night 270. Although the Englander came into the matchup with a great deal of momentum, he was ultimately unable to land any meaningful blows, with Page doing an expert job at moving in and out of Patterson’s range while delivering his own strikes.

Looking lost as to how to catch his fellow European, it was Page who came out on top with the clear decision victory.

Sam Patterson Seeks to Rebound at UFC Abu Dhabi

The first defeat of his time as a welterweight was undoubtedly a hard pill to swallow for the up-and-coming Patterson, who appeared perplexed in the face of Page’s superior degree of experience. Now, at UFC Abu Dhabi, he will get the opportunity to make up for the mistakes of the past when he locks horns with the well-traveled Santiago Ponzinibbio.

For the streaking Sam Patterson, a triumph is entirely necessary if he wants to have any hope of breaking through into the next level of the division. Should he manage to beat the veteran Argentinian, the door to the rankings could very much open to him later on in 2026.
