Joe Rogan has pointed out why Islam Makhachev must consider moving down to the lightweight category.

Surviving in the UFC is a brutal task, but for a number of years, Islam Makhachev has made it possible. Not only has he survived, but he has also ruled at the highest level.

First, the Dagestani dominated the lightweight division. Next up, he is now undefeated in the welterweight division too. Surprisingly, despite such dominance, Joe Rogan has a differing opinion on which weight class the 34-year-old should be.

Joe Rogan Wants Islam Makhachev to Come Down to Lightweight

The UFC commentator has been watching Makhachev since day one. Having attained a double champ status, Rogan wants him to back down a bit. Analyzing his fights, the UFC color commentator stated how the Dagestani hasn’t looked as dominant as he was in the lightweight division.

Thus, per Rogan, the ideal thing to do for Team Islam is to come down to lightweight.

He said, “Look at what he did to Dustin Poirier, look at what he did to Charles Oliveira. Just crushes them. This is the difference between him at 155 and him at 170. I understand what he wants to do, but if I was in his corner I'd be like 'maybe .”

Rogan’s statement does make sense. During his fight with Ian Garry, Makhachev was put to a hard test. He even failed to dominate Garry on the ground as he has been doing throughout his career. Garry also managed to land some vicious body kicks and blows to the face that left the champion bloodied. However, currently, Makhachev does not appear to have any plans of coming down.

Islam Makhachev Wants to Fight Again Before Ramadan

Despite getting knuckled in the face, Makhachev is not trying to settle for a vacation. Instead, he is hungry to defend his title once again before Ramadan. During his post-fight presser, the 34-year-old meant business. He pointed out that there were no significant injuries, which lines him up perfectly for yet another octagon appearance soon.

“Bro we have to fight before Ramadan, 100 percent, January, end of [2026] we have to fight. I'm 34 years old, I have to fight as soon as possible. I'm not cutting much weight, I don't have any big injuries. That's it,” Makhachev said.

Such a statement will surely make the likes of Carlos Prates elated. Now, everything depends on Dana White to make the final call.
