Does Ian Garry Really Have What it Takes to Defeat Islam Makhachev?

Ian Garry had one of the toughest fights against Islam Makhachev recently. Fighting for the welterweight gold, a lot of critics thought that Garry would be able to make things difficult for the Dagestani icon. However, as the bout ended, things followed the same usual pattern, with Makhachev picking up the win in a dominant manner. Following his loss, the Irishman has claimed that he can defeat Makhachev in their rematch. But the question is, can the 28-year-old really do so?

Ian Garry Looked Promising but Lacked Killer Instinct

The Irish fighter is known for his elite striking. And this was one big reason why he was heavily favored to beat Makhachev. A lot of critics even backed him to knock out Islam. Now, taking a closer look at what transpired, Garry could only land 29 significant strikes in his fight against the champion.

Of course, there were moments when Garry caused problems for Makhachev. 29 significant strikes aren't enough to bring down someone of Makhachev’s calibre. 

Whenever Garry went in to press or tried to mix things up with combinations, Makhachev shot for his leg for a takedown. This was where things got tiring for the Irish fighter. Although he defended the takedowns well, it drained a lot of energy in the process. The only way for Garry to put over Makhachev is to knock him out. 

Unfortunately, from what we have seen of Garry so far, he might not have the power to do so at the moment. Thus, until Garry improves his game, his dreams of beating Makhachev might not become a reality. 

Ian Garry Wants to Fight Michael Morales Next

Despite suffering a tough loss, Garry isn't backing down. Instead, he's trying to build his way to the top again. In his quest to fight for the welterweight title again, the Irish star wants to take on Michael Morales next.

Speaking to Eze Talks Sports, the 28-year-old said, “That's Michael Morales. When I beat him, I'm the only one who deserves a title shot, even though me and Islam have just fought. Whether Islam wins, whether Carlos Prates wins the next fight, it's two massive rematches. If I go out there and finish Michael Morales and get my hand raised, it's undeniable that I'm back up there for a title shot. That's what I think needs to be next."

UFC has not yet confirmed what lies next for Ian Garry.
