Five Biggest Storylines to Watch at EFC 137: Jacobs vs. Yemba

From a reigning champion attempting to make history to former titleholders looking to reclaim their place at the top, the upcoming EFC 137 card features several fighters with plenty on the line.

There are also multiple divisions waiting for someone to emerge as the next legitimate contender, and this event could provide that. Here are five of the biggest storylines to keep an eye on at EFC 137.

EFC 137 Storylines: 1. Can Faeez Jacobs Conquer the Featherweight Division?

Faeez 'The Troublemaker' Jacobs is already established as one of the EFC's upper-echelon fighters. At EFC 137, he will attempt to accomplish something that very few fighters in the promotion's history have managed to do.

Jacobs will move up to featherweight to face Shadrack 'Babayega' Yemba for the EFC Interim Featherweight Championship. This will see him momentarily put his bantamweight title aside as he attempts to become a two-division champion.

With EFC Featherweight Champion Igeu Kabesa still sidelined with an injury, the winner of this bout will ultimately sit at the top of the 145-pound division. Jacobs is often put into the same discussions as Kabesa, so it is quite fitting that 'The Troublemaker' now looks to conquer the same division that propelled him to greatness.

The biggest question for Jacobs is whether he will handle the additional weight allowance, and how this affects his performance on the night. Jacobs has spent years primarily competing at bantamweight, and Yemba presents a very different challenge.

Yemba is currently riding a three-fight winning streak, and he also competed in the 2025 PFL Africa season. At EFC 137, Yemba challenges for gold for the first time in his professional career - and there is no shortage of confidence from his end.

Yemba has predicted that one of the two fighters will be going to sleep, suggesting that he expects a decisive finish before the final bell. Adding another layer to the match-up, Yemba was recently seen training while wearing Jacobs' merchandise. Whether this was an attempt to get into the champion's head or simply having fun, Yemba has added some serious personality to an already-intriguing championship fight.

If Jacobs wins, he will take another step toward establishing himself as one of EFC's all-time greats. If Yemba pulls off the upset, he could immediately establish himself as one of the EFC's most dangerous featherweights - and also earn the honour of being the man who vanquished Jacobs' featherweight journey before it even got started.

EFC 137 Storylines: 2. Is The Luke Michael Comeback Season Here?

Former EFC Middleweight Champion Luke 'Young Gun' Michael knows what it takes to reach the top of the division. But after a controversy-filled title loss at EFC 131: KNOX Legacy Series in February, he now finds himself trying to rebuild momentum.

That loss came amid a period of significant change in his personal and professional life, making his return at EFC 137 particularly interesting. For the first time since 2021, Michael is set to compete in a non-title bout. Standing opposite him will be JT 'Blade' Botha.

On paper, this is a major step-up for Botha, and the match-up could also represent a major opportunity. Botha trains at Team CIT alongside former UFC Middleweight Champion Dricus du Plessis and the current EFC's own middleweight king, Diego Bandu - the same man who took the 185-pound title from Michael.

For Michael, this is about more than simply getting back into the win column. A victory would allow the former champion to begin rebuilding his championship campaign. Another defeat, however, could make the road back to the title considerably more difficult.

The middleweight division is already full of moving pieces, and EFC 137 could answer the question of whether Michael remains a part of that conversation. On September 10th, can the former champion remind everyone why he was sitting at the very top of the division for as long as he was?

EFC 137 Storylines: 3. The Long-Awaited Arrival of Lewis Mataya is Upon Us

This moment has been a long time coming for Lewis 'Porcupine' Mataya. The Zimbabwean fighter is finally set to make his EFC debut at EFC 137, but this is hardly his first time stepping into the promotion's Hex.

Mataya was one of the standout names at the 2022 IMMAF African Championships tournament - which was held at the WSB EFC Arena. Despite that early exposure to the promotion, it has taken several years for Mataya to finally enter that storied Hex as an EFC athlete. But the detour means that he arrives to the promotion with incredible momentum.

Mataya is 3-1 as a professional fighter and has won his last three fights, with all three victories coming by way of stoppage. In fact, he is yet to even see a bout make it to the third round. That finishing ability will be tested against South Africa's Ayanda 'The Power' Zwane, who has been tasked with welcoming him to the promotion.

Zwane has recently undergone something of a career resurgence. After suffering four consecutive defeats, Zwane has completely turned things around and enters EFC 137 on a three-fight winning streak. This makes for an intriguing clash between two fighters carrying momentum into the Hex.

For Mataya, however, there is an even bigger story behind the fight. The Zimbabwean recently documented selling his car in order to help fund his fight camp, offering a glimpse into just how much the EFC 137 opportunity means to him.

Zimbabwe has already produced several EFC champions, including Themba Gorimbo, Sylvester Chipfumbu, and Nicholas Hwende. Mataya now has an opportunity to write his own chapter in the fighting nation's history. But first, he has to get through Zwane.

If Mataya delivers another emphatic finish, the long-awaited arrival could quickly turn into the beginning of something much bigger for 'Porcupine'.

EFC 137 Storylines: 4. The EFC Middleweight Division Could Be Turned Upside Down

The EFC middleweight division's fate is at stake at EFC 137. Diego Bandu currently holds the title, while several fighters are positioning themselves for an opportunity to challenge him. EFC 137 could provide some clarity.

In addition to Luke Michael's clash with JT Botha in the co-main event, undefeated Nigerian prospect Josiah 'The Bully' Obasi will face Russia's German Kokaev. Obasi only made his promotional debut at EFC 135, where he defeated highly-regarded prospect JD van der Merwe via split decision. Another victory would keep Obasi undefeated, and the promotion will have to start considering him as the next title challenger.

Kokaev, however, could completely disrupt those plans. The Russian fighter, who is now based in Cape Town, will make his EFC debut and compete on the African continent for the first time. He has not fought since March 2024, when he suffered a second-round headkick loss.

That long period away from competition creates plenty of questions, but it also means that Kokaev has an opportunity make an immediate statement upon arrival in the EFC. A dominant victory over an undefeated prospect could send his stock soaring.

With Bandu at the top and names such as Michael, Botha, Obasi, and Kokaev all keeping an eye on the gold, EFC 137 could uncover who is genuinely ready for that title shot.

EFC 137 Storylines: 5. Can The EFC Flyweight Division Finally Get Moving?

The EFC flyweight division remains one of the promotion's most dynamic and ever-changing, but things have gotten stagnant at 125 pounds. The division has some of the most talented fighters, but it is still searching for the first legitimate challenger to EFC Flyweight Champion Tumelo Manyamala's reign. Several fighters will have the opportunity to prove themselves as what the division has been looking for at EFC 137.

Tebatso 'The Glory of Torture' Molele enters his match-up with Sisa Jungula coming off a unanimous decision victory at EFC 134. A win over Jungula could allow Molele to start his push toward the title. Jungula, however, will be looking to bounce back after his loss to Thapelo Seabi at the same event.

Elsewhere, Godknows 'The General' Ndlovu will face Lihle 'Rush Hour' Ngamntwini. Ndlovu recently snapped a three-fight losing skid with a unanimous decision victory, while Ngamntwini enters on a two-fight skid of his own that he looks to rectify. For both men, a victory could provide some much-needed momentum in a division that searches for its next big contender.

There is also a potential wildcard in the form of Tryford Mwanga. The Zambian made an explosive pro debut at EFC 132 in April, stopping his opponent with punches just 41 seconds into the fight. He will now face Lukhmaan Jhazbhay, who returns to competition after more than a year away from the Hex.

With several fighters looking to establish themselves, EFC 137 could be an important night for the flyweight division. Someone needs to separate themselves from the pack. But who will stand out above the rest?
