Ailin Perez's Controversial Dumont Win Draws Merciless Reactions From UFC Stars
Ailin Perez secured a unanimous decision win over Norma Dumont at UFC Vegas 121. That decision, however, seems to have rubbed people the wrong way.
For a matchup expected to decide the next in line for the bantamweight title, Ailin Perez vs. Norma Dumont was many things, but entertaining. Although the Argentine eventually extended her winning streak to the second-highest at bantamweight with seven wins, the decision didn't sit right with many fans. Now, two women UFC stars have joined the conversation.
UFC Fighters React to Controversial Decision
Ailin 'Fiona' Perez swept the scores of all 3 judges with a clean 29-28 unanimous decision win. People felt the reality was closer to the exact opposite, leaving Dumont feeling robbed.
Flyweight Casey O'Neill, who recently made headlines for a spectacular armbar finish, was among those who found the fight both questionable and largely underwhelming.
"Was expecting a fight after all that talking ! š #UFCvegas121," O'Neill wrote on X.
Even former bantamweight queen Amanda Nunes had nothing positive to say about the clash.
"Omg š¤®š¤¢," read her post.
Beyond the fighters, MMA Analyst Ariel Helwani arrived at a similar conclusion, taking to X shortly after the decision was announced.
"That Perez is ā¦ wild. I had it 29 x 28 Dumont. Quite surprised by that one," Helwani shared.
Clearly, the result has almost the entire MMA world scratching their heads, especially after most saw Dumont to be the clear winner in the second and third rounds. Perez, however, stands her ground, feeling like she dominated most of the fight.
It wasn't just the absurd decision that drew criticism.
Ailin Perez vs. Norma Dumont Becomes Snoozefest
After a heated pre-fight buildup and boiling rivalry between the ladies, the showdown largely failed to live up to those expectations. From condoms at the face-offs to Perez's bold head-kick knockout claims, the fight had seen it all. When that feud entered the Octagon, however, the gusto was nowhere to be found.
The Brazilian opponent forced Fiona to her back foot from the first second of the fight, even though the latter eventually took the round with better striking and a late takedown.
The second round, however, left little to argue after Dumont secured an early takedown and secured top position. Although the ladies ended up back on their feet, the Brazilian 'Immortal' landed the most significant punch of the round.
Still, the action came in short bursts, with the rest of the round quite unproductive. The third round had a similar trajectory. While Dumont pressed forward in the first half of the round, the final 90 seconds ended in a clinch, leaving judges little to work with.
Still, the consensus seems to be favoring 'The Immortal' heavily. Clearly, it wasn't just the underwhelming fight that sparked such reactions from O'Neill and Nunes, with the decision compounding that effect. Perez may have protected her streak, but definitely her title dreams will have to wait.
