Bruce Buffer On Islam Makhachev vs. Carlos Prates
During a recent livestream with globally known streamer N3on, Bruce Buffer shared his thoughts on what could be next for welterweight champion Islam Makhachev.
“He's about to fight Carlos, right?” N3on asked.
“That's what I heard,” Buffer replied. When asked to share his prediction, Buffer said, “I never predict fights like that, but I will just say that all the favoritism is going to go to Islam.”
The UFC legend made a smart pick. The Dagestani star has never been a betting underdog since becoming UFC champion.
In fact, Makhachev is reportedly a -250 betting favorite for his rumored matchup against Carlos Prates.
More on Makhachev vs. Prates
After a dominant title defense against Ian Garry at UFC 330, Islam Makhachev expressed interest in facing Brazilian contender Carlos Prates next.
Interestingly, the rumored matchup has now become a fan favorite. Even potential contender Michael Morales has stated that he is ready to fight Shavkat Rakhmonov in a title eliminator if Makhachev vs. Prates gets booked.
Moreover, Makhachev vs. Prates is reportedly in the works to headline UFC 336 in Toronto, Canada, in January 2027, per reporter Alvaro Colmenero. It promises to be an intriguing matchup, given Makhachev’s elite grappling and Prates’ fearless striking.
Makhachev came through his fight against Garry despite the Irishman’s size advantage. However, Garry exposed a few potential weaknesses in the champion’s game that other contenders could look to exploit.
As a result, this fight means more than just defending the title for Makhachev. A win over Prates would further strengthen his position in the division, especially after overcoming two of its toughest contenders.
