Conor McGregor Lays Claim to the Sun in Hilarious Response to Donald Trump

Just when you think Conor McGregor has run out of things to conquer, the former two-division UFC champion has set his sights on the solar system. In a hilarious exchange on social media, the Irish superstar responded to reports of President Donald Trump declaring the moon a U.S. territory with an astronomical claim of his own.

Replying to a post from prediction market platform Polymarket that highlighted Trump’s original Truth Social statement, McGregor chimed in with his signature swagger. "The sun is Ireland’s!" McGregor posted on X, accompanying his bold declaration with an Irish flag.

While claiming ownership of the center of the solar system was clearly done with a nod and a wink, McGregor’s playful interaction with Trump’s political orbit is nothing new. The two high-profile figures have maintained a strong mutual admiration society for several years now, dating back to high-profile White House visits and frequent public praise across various social media platforms.

More recently, business ties between the two camps have tightened significantly. Corporate filings revealed a massive $23 million investment structure led by American Ventures and Donald Trump Jr. into McGregor’s business venture, MMA Inc.

With Trump Jr. taking on an active strategic advisory role to help scale the global brand, the financial alignment has only fueled rampant fan speculation regarding McGregor headlining another UFC card at the White House.

However, conquering space online is vastly different from securing a victory inside the Octagon. The former featherweight and lightweight kingpin holds a professional MMA record of 22-6, including 19 knockouts, but he hasn’t won a fight since 2020, racking up 3 losses back to back.  

A long-awaited matchup against rival Ultimate Fighter coach Michael Chandler fell through last year due to injury. Instead, he ended up taking on Max Holloway and injured himself less than 2 minutes into the fight. 

With yet another loss to his name, the Irishman is desperate to get back into the win column, calling for a rematch against Holloway. However, since he injured his ACL and underwent surgery, fans will have to wait for a minimum of 6 months to see him return to action, and the Hawaiian won't wait for that long to book another fight. So it will be interesting to see who Dana White pairs him with when he does return. 

Ireland might not secure legal rights to solar energy anytime soon, but as long as McGregor has an internet connection, he will keep making sure the combat sports world continues to revolve around him.
